Local lads performed a minstrel show staged by the Elks at the Opera House on Monday night. The program was of exceptional merit and the audience filled the venue, marking a successful first performance by rising local talent.
The 1914 Model Six Cylinder B. P. O. E. minstrel at the A. Cook Opera House drew a full house. John Cannon hosted with EN Corey’s troupe delivering songs, skits, and encores under a carnival night theme. Continuous applause greeted Reese Matson, Heavy Cannon, and Claude Airhart, with a second part featuring temperance talk by Frank Cannon Jr and a romantic finale.
Temperatures dropped ten degrees below zero last night as Greencastle recorded its coldest weather of the year following a weekend blizzard. Wind has abated and snow has ceased.
The city suffered the coldest weather of the winter as temperatures plunged to 10 degrees below zero Monday night after a severe storm. Earlier, Sunday night reached 4 degrees below zero and the day stayed chilly with a steady 10 below zero through Monday, according to EK Shipley's self registering thermometer.
Snowdrifts five to eight feet block main routes across the region. Impassable roads halt commerce and travel as carriers turn back and teams cannot pass. Local authorities warn of ongoing closures with limited access to primary towns.
The county endured a severe blizzard Sunday and Monday with five to eight foot drifts. Mail carriers and paperboys faced impassable roads, horses sinking in snow, and hours of digging. Russell Farmer tried to reach Greencastle riding through drifts as the Herald struggled to publish before three.
Few subscribers managed to receive newspapers Monday night as heavy snows worsen across the country. Great drifts fill roads at many farms, with fences and gates buried. Road supervisors sent crews to clear drifts, hoping to open main rural routes by tomorrow for mail delivery.

Data from the Purdue Experiment Station says five bushels more per acre would lift the state corn crop value by 9.4 million dollars annually. Central National Bank and Central Trust Company plan to back an apple show if 1912 apple crop warrants an exhibit, to spur county fruit industry growth.
After a severe storm, city officials directed Charles Black and a team with a four horse road grader to break paths through heavy snow in the residence district. Streets and sidewalks were in bad condition, hindering wagons cabs and drays, with east side merchants nearly buried by a ten foot drift.
