Charles J. Admolm comments on slick streets and ice on Greencastle pavement. He jokes about 1920 license plates and teases Greencastle High School bragging rights over Terre Haute. He recalls a Clinton township Kiwanis crowd and a scary troop entertainment that unsettled children.
The Greencastle Kiwanis group held a Clinton Center schoolhouse gathering with a well received performance of The Hoosier Mindmaster Up-to-date. A fish supper followed. Winners included Bick Brothers in prelims and French harpist Test. Walter Calvert and Aller Calvert earned top honors in dancing.
Putnam county commissioners meet in regular session Monday with routine business on the agenda. Bids are to be opened for motor trucks for the county road force and for files for the clerk and auditor offices. December’s report from the state conservation commission is to be reviewed and fines from fish and game law violations are noted.
Greencastle 41 Garfield Terre Haute 12 as Ellis leads with 13 points. Tobin and Evan Crawley score eight and seven respectively, with strong frontcourt work from Gene Crawley and Campbell. Garfield’s Price shines on offense but struggles against Cubs’ paced defense.
Greencastle built an early lead and held on as Hurst scored 11 for Greencastle. Tucker Stone added four field goals while McCarty Coy and Eder led Garfield with key baskets as McAnally dominated inside for the locals.
City Marshal Otto Dobbs was hit by a Chevrolet driven by Bernard Thomas near City Hall around 7 PM. He was unconscious briefly, then treated by Dr. J F Gillespie for minor bruises. he recovered. Dobbs and Frank Vaughn witnessed the incident as the car from Hoffman’s Cigar Store passed.
City streets grew slippery causing several minor crashes. City Marshal Otto Dobbs warned drivers to slow down. A Ford coupe owned by Charles Heath and driven by Arthur Heath lost a rear wheel at Walnut and Indiana to avoid a Home Steam Laundry truck. no injuries. Two other cars driven by Raymond Fisher and Roscoe Brown collided at Vine and Washington with no damage.
Lone Star Cement Co announces a weekend shutdown of the Terre Haute plant for an indefinite period. About 200 workers affected as weather and construction slow. Operations expected to resume around March 15 if shipments recover, with group insurance kept in force for returning staff.
Although yesterday was the last day for auto license plates, Franklin street garage and local distributors continued issuing licenses today. Over 300 licenses were issued yesterday, about 2500 by end of day, roughly half the county’s cars. Beginning today, unlicensed drivers face arrest and most latecomers are expected to obtain plates next week.
The Rev Oscar Thomas Olson of Baltimore will deliver five Simpson lectures at DePauw University next week. He will speak on a valid world to live in a reliable God to trust in a reasonable religion to believe in a personal Christ to confide in and a liberated life to glory. The lectures run Wednesday through Friday with three during chapel and two in the afternoon and evening sessions.
Joseph Jeffries 73 a longtime Roachdale resident died Thursday night at 5 14 at his home from pneumonia after ten days illness He was born May 15 1866 in Putnam County the son of Harvey and Malinda Jeffries He married Matilda Johnson Feb 25 1800 He is survived by widow two sons Ernest of Roachdale Owen of Greencastle and three grandchildren A son Earl died April 14 190%. Funeral arrangements not announced.
Roachdale defeated Russellville 27 to 23 at Russellville Friday night. Russellville played most of the game without their center due to illness. Both teams showed teamwork and a fast hard fought game.
Dr. Oscar Thomas Olson will move his second Simp son lecture to Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Meharry hall to avoid conflicting with the Kedroff Quartet concert in the same room. The five part series begins Wednesday morning at chapel and continues through Friday morning with the theme Some Realities of Today. The Kedroff Quartet is the fourth fine arts program, with reduced admission. next on February 15 is the Ben Greet Players presenting Hamlet.
Mrs. Fred Goodwine travels to Junction City Louisiana to visit relatives for several weeks. The hospital association plans a meeting with Mrs. W R Hutcheson tomorrow afternoon. Thad Peck is unanimously elected Republican District Chairman for the Fifth district at a Terre Haute meeting, nominated by S A Hays.
A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce is set for Monday evening at 7 30 in the First National Bank building.
The Greencastle high school defeated Gerstmeyer of Terre Haute in a debate at the local high school auditorium. The issue was whether Indiana should adopt by law the principle of old age pension. Judges were H B Gough Herold T Ross and Robert Williams. The Greencastle team included Hubert Dirks Charles Brown and Philip Taylor. The next debate is set for February 7 with Clinton at Clinton.
Paul Lindley 19, son of the local sheriff, died in an auto accident near Paoli after a basketball game. His car skidded on an icy corner, went down an embankment and overturned. Companion Robert Braxton escaped with minor injuries. Lindley was a DePauw University student and Sigma Chi member on vacation.
Animateny cast of five women and five men presented Sir Lillian Martiner's three act comedy A Wild Flower of the ftilis at the Bainbridge Masonic Opera House. Local players Mrs Addie Gilmore as Mammy, Lilly Dolby Ceallings as Mose, Miss Luelle Metz as Mrs Burke, Dayne Collings as John, and Bill Morris as Jed Burke drew praise for vivid character work. two numbers by a local high school quartet added to the program. The Methodist Church Ladies Aid Society guided the cast and earned broad credit for the success.
Walter Shirts appointed superintendent of fish and game in Indiana to succeed the late George Mannfeld who died earlier this month.
