Fern Mansfield Sandstone Plant Noted In 38th Geology Report

The state geology report highlights the Root Glass sand plant at Fern Terre Haute five miles southwest. Mansfield sandstone from Fern is praised as top grade for glass making and the plant capacity is listed at 100 tons daily. Otto Mecum returns from Chicago tonight.

Vote Orphanage to Open Here in Greencastle

Trustees plan to rent a house in Greencastle soon for a proposed new institution named Vote Orphanage. It will admit orphans and dependent children of the state and seek local support to benefit the town.

Trustees met at Rev B D Becks home to decide on Greencastle as the site for a Methodist orphanage. They will rent initially then buy a home later. They aim to raise five dollars a month from twenty citizens for a year to cover early costs. Angie Godwin will be superintendent and trustees include Mrs Mary E Weeks Peru Rev B D Beck and others from Greencastle.

Chimney Sparks Spark Roof Blaze at West Walnut Home

Sparks from a chimney sparked a fire at Mrs. L. I. Crawford’s home on west Walnut street Tuesday afternoon. A two foot roof hole formed but firefighters using chemical apparatus averted heavy damage. Insurance covered the loss. A passerby alerted the box 6L alarm at Madison and Walnut. The quick response and chemical usage kept the blaze from spreading despite wind. Separately Alva Lisby, superintendent of Filmore Christian Sunday School, received a rocking chair from pupils for two years of service, with attendance rising from 20 to 120.

Weather Man Warns of Another Severe Cold Wave

The community fears a third great cold spell as temperatures drop and ice forms. The Weather Man predicts another severe cold snap may arrive in Indiana soon, despite midweek forecasts of possible fair weather.

Burglary at Filmore General Store Stolen Goods Reported

Hordes entered the Filmore store and stole several pairs of shoes and other wearables. A big store provision items were taken from the General Store owned by Thomas Bollannon but nothing else appears missing after a break in at the Big Four Station.

Hoboes Break Into Filmore General Store

Thieves broke into a Filmore general store owned by Thomas Bohan on Tuesday night, smashing a front door to crawl inside. They stole shoes, clothing, tobacco, cigars, and food, then fled by freight train. Sightings near the Big Four station, formerly Delmar, point to the suspects. A fire was started under a box car in Filmore yards, threatening its destruction.

Washington reports parcel post has become a strong revenue source for the post office department. Officials say two-year results exceed forecasts with parcel post income from 40 to 50 million dollars, up to 60 million including books and catalogs, and a projected 1.2 billion parcels this year. Indiana to Pay Debt and Clear Old Indebtedness

Indiana prepares to pay 815000 in bills bringing relief to the state and freeing it from outstanding loans for the first time in eighty two years. The Board of Finance is ready to meet and the capitol building costs will be covered after thirty years of delay.

Indiana pays off state debts and bonds tied to state house

The Indiana board of finance authorized $685000 to Indianapolis banks and $130000 in foreign debt to be paid, clearing all state indebtedness from the state house project. Payments total 685000 plus 5 percent interest, with $400000 to Fletcher National Bank and other disbursements to Merchants National, Indiana Trust, Indiana National, Central National Greencastle, Citizens National Greencastle, and Citizens National Tipton. The $300000 railroad incorporation fee is covered by treasury funds.

County road records show 1914 repair costs totaling 35 609 46 with a new system saving funds. Lisby notes 4 883 97 for 24 assistants salaries and 15 719 27 for labor while materials cost 13 681 22. Tax take totals 45 682 78, county share plus state auto licenses bring to 49 182 17 with a 153 572 71 surplus after road maintenance funding.

The Applegate Lodge No. 155 F. and A. M. of Filmore has elected officers for the ensuing year. Byrd Brownell left today for Waterloo Iowa after a week’s visit with friends in the city.
