December 26 reports say Italian regulars have reached factories on the edge of Fiume and are closing in on the D Annunzio stronghold. Gen Caviglia ordered occupation of advanced positions around Fiume following incidents and threats by the Lecionaries. Poet's soldiers resisted, with five killed and thirty wounded.
Italian regulars under Gen Caviglia advance from Udine toward Fiume, cutting off the triangle and capturing the aviation field at Grobnico as D'Annunzio troops retire without resistance. The fleet guards Fiume bay while both sides hold fire until further orders.
Nikola Pachitch, former premier and head of the Jugoslav peace delegation in Paris, has agreed to form a new cabinet in Belgrade. The French Foreign Office reports suppression of the French diplomatic post with ex-King Nicholas of Montenegro in Paris following the Rapallo treaty and Montenegro elections.
The funeral service for Jerry O'Brien age 91 was held at 9 this morning at St Pauls Catholic Church, conducted by Rev. Father Walsh. Burial followed in Forest Hill Cemetery. The body was brought here from Hammond Indiana, where he died Friday evening at his daughter's home.
The death is attributed to bronchial pneumonia. Survived by daughter Mrs Hannah Barrell and son John O'Brien of Elkhart. Former Greencastle resident who lived on the north Jackson street road near Monon station for forty six years. After his daughter Miss Anna O'Brien died about five years earlier he moved to Hammond to live with Mrs Barrell. The death of Mrs O'Brien occurred shortly before the daughter Anna's death.
On Sunday afternoon at 3 oclock Lloyd L Houck of Putnam County and Miss Marie Houk were married at the bride's parents home in Brazil. Rev Charles Shattuck officiated with a full ring Christian Church ceremony. Immediate relatives attended and the couple left for a short wedding trip before living with the groom's parents in Washington Township.
In Goshen Indiana on December 26 a police officer halted a Christmas dance at the stroke of 12 midnight warning dancers there would be prosecution for Sabbath desecration if they continued. About 250 attendees were present and musicians were ordered to stop.
In Indianapolis on December 29, Republican state chairman Edward M. Basmuth called committeemen to plan for strengthening the party into city primaries next spring. The aim is to place capable Republican organizations in municipal races, building a nucleus to sustain preparedness for the next election. The committee will review the coming legislative program and seek to suppress any bills threatening party harmony.
Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Throop visited Carbon for Christmas with relatives and friends. They drove home Sunday through a snow storm, noting the trip over an unbroken road was not the most enjoyable kind of driving.
Howard Harris, Putnam County sheriff, will turn over office to sheriff elect Lawrence Sears next Saturday. After four years of efficient service he retires to reenter the horse and mule trade at Brother's Livery Barn, where he will buy and sell stock.
Locust Street Church presented a Friday Christmas program led by Miss Delilah Miller. Children performed well beside two decorated trees creating holiday spirit. Donations topped 175 dollars for relief of starving European children, with Prof Bundy from the University speaking on The Suffering I Saw at Vienna, and more gifts for Vienna children.
Mrs C T Zaring entertained the bridge club at her home located at the corner of Vine and Poplar streets this afternoon.
Enrico Caruso, the famed tenor, is under care of five physicians in Aruso Illinois after a pleurisy attack at the Metropolitan Opera. The doctors say the condition is painful but not serious, requiring room confinement. He hopes to return within two or three weeks unless complications arise.
Lydia Hubbard Moore aged 80 widow of Granville C. Moore died near noon Monday at her daughter Mrs Eugene Hawkins home. Death from apoplexy following a year long illness. Survived by daughter and son Charles T. Moore of Indianapolis. Born Putnam County March 1 1841. Funeral arrangements pending. Birth of a son to Mr and Mrs Clarence Von Tress noted. Reports of bootlegger activity proved unfounded.
Shipley a Greencastle jeweler urged a townwide campaign of preparedness after a recent robbery. He called for police powers for firefighters, a courthouse bell linked to store wires, armed vigilance, venue searches for weapons, and strict questioning of suspicious visitors to deter crime and brand Greencastle as unsafe for outlaws.
The speaker urges the mayor to convene a prompt meeting on the issues raised. A warning is given that after a large haul and possible casualties, action may be too late. Mr and Mrs William Grose and daughters Helen and Mildred of Franklin Indiana are visiting Mr and Mrs Thomas King.
Indianapolis livestock market opened after a holiday period with hog prices advancing. Most hogs sold $10.25 to $10.75, some light hogs around $10.85, extra heavyweight $10.00, pigs to $11.25. Total receipts around $11,000 for hogs, cattle $1,100, calves $300, sheep and lambs $100. Cattle and calves steady, best yearlings $16.59. sheep and lambs nominal.
Regular air mail service now connects the United States with Cuba via Key West and Havana. The two aeromarines named Pinta and Santa Maria completed a 1,600 mile coast-to-coast test before inaugurating service. They carried about 500 pounds of mail, 21,000 letters, each stamped to mark the first airplane mail between the U S and a foreign country. Stops included Norfolk, Manteo, Southport, Georgetown, Charleston, St. Augustine, Fort Pierce, and Miami before arrival in Havana.
Henry Newgent 50 died Christmas night at his East Anderson street home after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday at Locust street church with Rev. H. C. Clippinger in charge. burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Survived by widow and four children, with ties to Greencastle and Putnam County.
Green Castle woke to a late Christmas scene as five inches of snow blanketed the ground after midnight Saturday. Snow fell throughout the day and cooled by dusk. Children enjoyed sledding and snowball fights, while officials cautioned that accumulation would not greatly exceed the current amount.

Wm Kreigh transfers land to Mary Freeman for $1 and Jesse P Kendall to C F Modlin for $1. Other deeds include Henry Bicknell receiving a Greencastle lot, James M Reds acquiring Bainbridge lot for $210, and multiple 44 71 87 acre transfers plus city sale of a Forest Hill Cemetery lot for $200.
Terre Haute couple Lloyd Landis Houck and Jennie Marie Houk appear in a marriage license record with names Fores A. Johnson and Nellie Eleanor Piety listed as associated parties or witnesses.
The condition of farmer W J Swope living near Clinton Falls is reported critical today. Doctors Cassell Tucker and W W Tucker operated Sunday for strangulated bowels. Mr Cope’s condition is described as 40 bad with little hope for recovery. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Grimes of Limedale announce the birth of a daughter born Monday.
