Jeffersonville Man Fined for Third Intoxication

Harry Pittman a 30 year old Jeffersonville resident was fined 40 and sentenced to 90 days in City court for a third intoxication offense just before Christmas. Mayor Harry Poindexter announced the ruling after Pittman admitted to the charge.

Men WANTED BY DANVILLE ARE UNDER ARREST

Sheriff Bert Lucas reports Indianapolis police captured two fugitives from Danville jail, George Wellington and John Adams, with Logan Mains also arrested. They hid in Morgan county. Wellington and Mains to be turned over to Hendricks county officers. Suspected fur theft at Mosier barn is noted but not confirmed by Indianapolis police.

King George Shows Further Gain In Health

Royal physicians report King George had a restful night and his condition improved slightly. The bulletin, issued at 11:00 a.m., boosts hope that the king has passed the worst part of his illness and is on the road to recovery.

Decatur Indiana reports R L Wilson Adams county farmer arrested on grand larceny for bidding in poultry and live stock at auctions and leaving with purchases without paying. He confessed to taking scores of chickens and a valuable owl. He is to be arraigned in Bluffton. Twenty Men Rounded Up in Chicago Kidnapping Case

Police raids last night rounded up twenty men in the Chicago Mafia extortion ring probe linked to the murder of Ole Scully, a key Ranieri kidnaping trial witness. More than 150 suspects were detained citywide. most were released after questioning. The Ranieri trial proceeded under heavy guard with all attendees searched.

The Pennsylvania Railroad will install a modern signal device at the Almeda crossing after talks with Mayor Charles McGaughey and representatives Volz and Clyde Randel of Terre Haute. A second plan to replace the cemetery crossing watchman with a signal requires an ordinance. The Traction Company has opposed signals at Almeda, and the Chamber of Commerce plans a Public Service Commission hearing.

D C Stephenson former Indiana Klan leader petitions Indiana Supreme Court for writ of coram nobis claiming newly discovered evidence. He alleges Imperial Wizard Hiram Evans hired Frank Dobbs to kill him in Noblesville during the 1925 murder trial over Madge Oberholtzer's death.

Stilesville Man Robert C. Harlan Dies at 90

The death of Robert C. Harlan, aged 90, a Stilesville resident, occurred Tuesday night after a period of failing health. He was born in Hendricks County and lived nearby. Survived by his widow and six children including Dora Dicks in Oklahoma and Elvin Harlan in Greencastle area. Funeral arrangements to be announced.

Influenza Epidemic Spreads Eastward Across U S

The Public Health Service reports influenza raging in at least 15 states with over 1,000,000 cases nation wide and 141,000 new weekly cases. The outbreak is spreading toward Atlantic coastal cities in five to seven weeks, with officials noting the virus is far less virulent than 1918 but predicts millions will be affected. Surgeon General Cum​ming cites reports from many areas of a milder strain than the 1918 pandemic.

Conference Aims to Conciliate Bolivia and Paraguay

Postoffice to Open Sunday and Dispatch Mail All Day

Postmaster E. R. Bartley announced the postoffice will open Sunday December 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon with general delivery and stamp windows available and carriers on duty. Windows reopen 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Parcel post delivery continues all day and the office will handle mail on every incoming and outgoing train.

Putnam Circuit Court Indicts Forgery Suspect Samuel Dickey

Samuel Dickey aged 21 of west of Greencastle pleaded guilty in Putnam Circuit Court to forging two checks in Clinton township. Judge James P. Hughes withheld sentence pending further investigation. Dickey forged Ira Moore’s signature on a $2 check at R. P. Mullins drug store and cashed a $3 check at H. L. Frazier filling station claiming Moore’s truck fuel. Separate, Truman Adams 35, a penal farm escape, was sentenced to 1 to 5 years in Indiana State Prison after an escape in Posey County. Adams claimed abuse spurred his flight and underwent a hip wound alleged caused by his father-in-law.

Indiana assessors press for higher salaries at state tax meeting

At the twenty eighth annual state tax board conference in Indianapolis Brow of Rockport said tax law revisions make Indiana a model for others. County assessors urged salary increases citing being under paid versus other officials. Governor Jackson welcomed attendees.

Fraterney House Robberies Hit Three Fraternities and Station

Three Greencastle fraternities and a High Point filling station endured break ins Tuesday night. Delta Tau Delta at Taylor Place lost over $100 cash and a $60 watch. Delta Upsilon at Seminary and Arlington lost about $5 cash and two watches. Sigma Nu at 209 South College Avenue chased the thief from the premises as a dog pursued, with minor losses reported. The High Point filling station on East Washington Street suffered a second-time haul of merchandise after a north window was pried open. The Greencastle High School building was entered but nothing was stolen. authorities suspect a single group carried out the raids between 2:30 and 4:00 AM.

Robber Loots Beta Pi Fraternity House

A prowler entered the Beta Pi fraternity at dawn, ransacked rooms, and stole $120 along with watches. The intruder fired a .38 bullet into a door as he fled, while about forty students were in the sun parlor during the break in.
