The county teachers institute closes with praise for Frank Wallace the County Superintendent for offering an outstanding program. Lecturers engaged teachers as Masters of their subjects and the event featured Miss Herr of Brazil demonstrating the victrolla in music education and continuing Friday.
The first Coatesville Picnic is set for tomorrow with entertainment, lemonade, and other trimmings. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy the day.
Local note reports Greencastle mayor and marshal declaring war on open cut out trucks but cement trucks from the plant seem exempt. Trucks continue through Washington Street day and night, provoking indignation among residents while no action is taken to curb the nuisance.
Prof J A Clement former head of the DePauw Education and Psychology Department resigns to become head of the Department of Secondary Education at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois. He has taught at the University of Washington this summer and will move to Evanston with his family in about two weeks.
DePauw expects its largest ever student body this fall as women’s residence halls and the Campus Cottage fill. The Rector Scholarship Committee has nearly 100 new scholars and more may join beyond the gift limit. Florence Hall is being refitted with two large sleeping porches for incoming freshmen men.
Mrs Virgil Grimes hosted about fifty young women at her East Seminary Street Greencastle home last evening. The house glowed with cut flowers Japanese lanterns and special electric lighting. A musical program by Mr Hirschberg and Robert Taylor was presented.
Local legend Cap Harney plans a noon Saturday surprise high in Greencastle skies. The event, kept secret, is teased as a rare sight with stores offering bargains and a playful bet that will leave Greencastle residents with sore necks.

The opposition to woman suffrage in Tennessee presses a fierce bid to reconsider the vote approving the measure. Speaker Walker altered his stance to move reconsideration and claims enough votes to defeat it. If his bid succeeds, women lose the ballot and cannot vote in the presidential election. Cincinnati women are notably active in the lobbying effort. Walker must move today or end the effort.
Rev F O Fraley will preach at Filmore Methodist Church next Sunday morning. In the evening Miss Ruth Myers will share her work with the Gary week day school of religion. Special music is planned.

All Rebekahs and Odd Fellows riding to Shades Sunday on the truck should meet at Putnam Lodge Hall at 8 o'clock sharp.

Demand for coyote skins may wipe out the nuisance in western regions around Mount Whitney. Hunters and trappers are active, pursuing the animals with vigor as they threaten extermination due to the growing fur trade.
A Monon freight derailed when a culvert bridge failed under the engine near Indiana Cement Co. in Lime Dale. The engine blocked the broken bridge and will take days to remove. No injuries reported as wrecking crews reroute trains via the Cement Plant switch.
The Carpenter Construction Company finished one quarter mile of concrete pavement on the National Road from Seeleyville westward toward town. Straw covers the pavement and it is kept wet for several days. The west section may open to traffic in a few days and construction aims to reach Cloverland before fall frosts. Roy Kattman of Brazil supervises for the state highway commission.
Indiana University forecasts a record year with about 4,500 students attending this term. This compares to 3,701 students enrolled last year, reflecting a sharp increase in registrations and inquiries about catalogs and room accommodations.
Robert Pierce of Wadley Cream Station is in Lafayette today to take the Cream Jester Examination. Miss Cornelia Allen is due home early next week from New London Connecticut after visiting relatives for several weeks.
Mr and Mrs Harry Goldberg and their son David have returned home after spending several weeks in New York City Atlantic City Philadelphia and other major eastern cities. In New York Mr Goldberg attended style shows and purchased a large shipment of fall fashions including suits coats and dresses for women and children.
County Superintendent Wallace announces a new annual plan allowing all county teachers to gather in Greencastle for a general lecture by visiting experts. After the kickoff on September second, the program shifts to township sectional meetings focusing on primary, intermediate, and high school topics with health, reading, agriculture, and community themes.
Maynard H. Buis and Osa Cummings wed. Beryl Hutcheson and Blanche Frazier also listed for licenses. Land transfers include Edward Broth era in Clinton township and Denny to Cox in Greencastle township. Miss Finnia Brink visits Indianapolis. social at St Paul’s Catholic Church raises funds for the church.
The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce has filed a protest with the Public Service Commission against proposed intrastate rate increases on coal brick limestone and other low grade commodities. The protest will be part of the Monday August 23 hearing as railroads seek to raise intrastate rates to align with recent interstate hikes.
Ponquesy Council will come to Terre Haute on Saturday evening to confer the Pocahontas degree on a class admitted to the Terre Haute lodge. Refreshments follow.
