Indianapolis August 18 An order by the public service commission grants Elwood Water Company a 37 percent rate rise. The commission fixed a $329,529 valuation, rejected the company’s $650,000 figure, and set new rates based on a $300,000 valuation. Minimum meter rents and monthly charges are specified, with hydrant rentals at $6.00 per month.
Indiana farmers were urged to trim growing corn at road intersections to improve sight lines for motorists and reduce crossing accidents. A H Hinkle, maintenance superintendent for the highway commission, called for cutting back 50 to 100 feet to remove traffic hazards.
The Boardman and Morris reunion will be held Sunday August 19 at the home of Mr and Mrs Paul Grimes on Berry street. Relatives and friends are invited.

The Fletcher American Company of Indianapolis paid a premium of 111 dollars for 50 240 dollars in Greencastle township road bonds sold by County Treasurer Alva F E Lisby. First National Bank and Central National Bank of Greencastle bid a 50 premium. Bonds fund the Oscar Obenchain road project west on Walnut Street. work already started by Sweet and Wright. State Board of Tax Commissioners approved after remonstrance by township taxpayers.
Howard Hanks, son of Mr and Mrs John A Hanks, drove a new Ford roadster that struck an air stand at the east Washington Street Filling Station on Friday afternoon after sideswiping a truck driven by Arthur Hanneman. The air stand broke off and the Ford bumper bent. Hanks was unhurt.
Senator Simeon D. Fess of Ohio informs Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas that the Republican party has nominated him for vice president. Curtis will deliver an acceptance speech by radio at 5 PM CST as ceremonies begin in Topeka Kansas.
Edna Brown, 25, of Paragon Morgan County, drank poison when an officer approached over a petit larceny charge. She died two hours later at Bloomington hospital. The warrant, issued by Frank Ford, concerned $65 allegedly taken during work on Indiana University field house construction.
Eighteen surviving Greencastle Post Grand Army of the Republic veterans will be honored guests at the Sons of Veterans bean dinner for old soldiers at Allendale Springs on Wednesday August 29. Arrangements were approved at a Sons of Veterans meeting with committees named for arrangements transportation chairs grounds and entertainment. Attendees are asked to bring knife spoon fork and a tin cup.
Miss Florine Gobin arrived home today from a house party at Bass Lake. Mrs. E. A. Hamilton and daughter Eulalia have gone to Cleveland Colorado and will travel to the Lakes and Niagara Falls. Mrs. Lillie Landes and Miss Hallie Landes hosted a shower for Verna Burnsides. Ross McCullough of Reelsville was here en route to New Mexico for a visit.
Herbert Hoover will conclude his western campaign with three major speeches in Chicago Kansas City and a closing radio address from San Francisco or Palo Alto. He plans to keep his speaking engagements limited to explain Republican issues and may reject further requests despite advisers pushing a broader schedule.
A state warrant for Martin Stienk of Indianapolis was issued over a wrecked Buick loaded with liquor near Mt. Meridian. Sheriff Eitelforg e questions Indianapolis police claims the car was stolen, noting 40 to 50 gallons of illicit liquor and a wine case taken by bystanders. The driver escaped in a second car after the crash with an Easex sedan involved in the collision.
Mrs. Richard Fern, living northwest of Bedford, is in serious condition after being bitten by a copperhead while picking beans in her garden. She stepped on what she thought was a stick and later found the snake had struck above her knee. Her leg swelled and blackened and boils appeared on other parts of her body from the venom. The attending physician attributed the poison to a copperhead.
The first Putnam County Farm Picnic at the Indiana State Farm becomes an annual event. About 1 600 to 1 700 registered with estimates of 2 000 attendance including guests from California Texas Oklahoma Winds Ohio Michigan and many Indiana counties. State Farm cooperation kept the day orderly while Pur due experts answered questions and local dealers displayed equipment.
Eight men and one woman were to be taken to Indianapolis for arraignment after arrests by federal prohibition agents. The raids followed evidence gathered by undercover men. H. L. Bendel led the raiders. prisoners to appear before a U.S. commissioner in Indianapolis.

The trans Atlantic Greater Rockford with Bert Hassell and Parker Cramer prepared to fly 1600 miles from Cochrane Ontario toward Mount Evans Greenland as the next leg to Stockholm Sweden. Weather was favorable though danger lay in crossing northwestern Canada wilderness.
