Charles J. Arnold wins the Greencastle Herald prize with the suggestion Keep it yourself for spending the $25 contest prize. The judges award him first place for a clever answer in the open to the world contest. Concrete for Washington street is planned later.
Dorsey Construction expects to complete the paving of Indiana Street late this week. By Wednesday morning only one and a half blocks remained unpaved, with the big concrete mixer on the block between Poplar and Seminary streets and one and a half blocks north to Walnut Street yet to pave. Work began last fall but faced repeated delays due to bad luck and weather.
Julius Dow, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Dow, from a farm south of the County Farm in Marion township, reportedly left home Sunday night and has not been heard from since. He attended Greencastle High School last year and is described as a missing teen. Funeral plans were under way in Connersville for Maude Starkey, 62, widow of former Chief A J Starkey after a car driven by her daughter went into a ditch and overturned southwest of Connersville.
Anderson Ind August 7 Miss Lela Whitlow 16 daughter of Mr and Mrs O P Whitlow who had been missing since June 28 was located today in Danville Va Mr and Mrs Paul Wilkinson former roommates at the Whitlow home were with Miss Whitlow and were taken into custody by police at Danville for investigation The girl will be brought back to Anderson by her father Details of her whereabouts and reasons for the disappearance have not been learned.
Elaborate plans for the first annual Putnam County Farmer's picnic at the Indiana State Farm on Friday August 17 outline a 10 am start, a noon basket dinner, and tours of dairy poultry horticulture soils and crops led by experts. The Putnam County Farm Bureau will provide free table service drinks and ice cream.
Tim Elliott and Walter Chammes of Greencastle were found guilty by Esquire W. W. Gates for intoxication while in a car. They were fined $41.15 each but could not pay and were ordered confined in the county jail. Brazil Times.

The Mallory liner Algonquin carrying over 300 passengers lost its bearings in a hurricane off Florida. Charles Cline, 19, an orphan, drew a six month term at the Indiana State Farm after pleading guilty to cashing a fraudulent $27.50 check at Glascock Jewelry. He admitted eight total forgeries, seven from local banks and one Mitchell bank. Judge James Mughes warned of re-arraignment if he strays. Also jailed was Robert Denny, 46, with 1 to 6 years for a Penal Farm escape.
Marauder group enters Delta Upsilon fraternity house at 72 East Seminary Street Tuesday night and ransacks rooms in search of valuables. Fraternity members report almost every room disturbed though losses not yet determined due to incomplete check.
Fred Reising and Ed McG Walls visited Indianapolis to see Marquard, the famed pitcher, removed from the box. Miss Alma Crawley injured when thrown from a buggy as a horse frightened by an auto. Brazil seeks a new courthouse funded by a tax levy. Miss Mildred Allen to host the Theta summer club this afternoon north of town.
Pola Italy mourns 31 seamen after the Italian submarine F-14 sank in the Adriatic following a collision with the destroyer Giuseppi Missouri. The submarine was towed in by a 250 ton ponton and found dead from gas after opening. Signals with the crew ceased yesterday afternoon.
George F. Brennan Democratic leader of Illinois died in Chicago at age 65 after a weeklong illness from septic poisoning and kidney complications. He had been unconscious most of the time and survived by his widow and daughter Mary. Brennan had been a key figure for Governor Al Smith’s forces since 1924 and helped secure Smith’s Houston Convention victory.
In Frankfort Indiana on August seven after beating Wingate marshal unconscious with an automobile jack two men and a woman were arrested by Sheriff Hillis and Deputy Webster in a woods southeast of Wingate and brought to Frankfort. William Hohman twenty five of Lafayette J T Mavers forty of Logansport and Ida Winters of Muncie are in jail following a prior arrest for stealing hides at Rossville.
The Greencastle Band will perform fifteen pieces in a Thursday night concert starting at 8 o clock from the north side of the courthouse. The program features marches by Panella Lithgow Laurendean and Sousa, overtures by Myers Southwell and Skaggs, solos and a checkered flag finale with intermission after The Ambassador. Notable titles include Shrine of Liberty My Tuba Solo and Symbol of Honor.
Property owners on South Jackson and Illinois streets who have not paid the city treasurer for street improvements will face sale after Saturday at 4 PM. Treasurer Alva Lisby notes liens can be filed after this Saturday and urges owners to pay or sign for the Barrett Law granting ten years to pay.
Lawrence Slavens 26 of Plainfield Ind died in Indianapolis after receiving 2300 volts on a pole and falling 45 feet breaking his neck. He was the third live wire victim in 36 hours, with Elmer French and his wife killed nearby while installing a radio aerial.
Governor Alfred E. Smith agrees to publicly answer charges leveled by Rev John Roach Straton. Straton accepts challenge and proposes a wide venue, possibly Madison Square Garden, for a Sept 2 start as campaign drama looms in New York and nation.
