Fillmore Home Damaged by Morning Fire

Fire started upstairs at the old Garrett home in Fillmore injuring furnishings and the upper story. Neighbors formed a bucket brigade before help arrived. the loss was covered by insurance. Jhey and Lela Garrett owned the house, known as the old rink Garrett home, now inherited by their two daughters.

Indianapolis Man Hurt As Car Rollover Near County Farm

Henry Emge of 1023 North Ewing Street Indianapolis was slightly injured when his car rolled over on the east Washington street road near the County Farm around 7 30 this morning. Emge, en route to Greencastle to work on the West Campus college building, had the vehicle towed first to Greencastle from Franklin Street Garage then scheduled a wrecker from Indianapolis for further service. Earlier a separate ditch incident on Manhattan Sunday afternoon involved a car with two couples, minor damage and no injuries.

Cloverdale Woman Dies by Own Hand Amid Trio of Suicides

Mrs. Martha J. Alkire, 74, shot herself at her son’s farm home near Cloverdale, citing ill health. She leaves two sons, William of Cloverdale and Harry of Lebanon. Funeral services were held at Mt. Pisgah cemetery.

Bid Dr Taylor Farewell At A Union Service

A Methodist union service honored Dr. Taylor with a large crowd in the city’s great auditorium. Ministers from multiple churches praised his pastorate and music featured organ and a choir of over fifty. Dr Taylor and Mrs Taylor travel to Hobart tomorrow for the South Bend District Conference. Froebel of Gary piled up 52 points to win the sixth Greencastle high school interscholastic track and field meet on Blackstock field. Brazil's Fuqua outstanding with 16 of his school's 17 points. New marks set in hurdles, pole vault, high jump, and shot put.

Rector students outrank women in scholarship

Freshmen mid semester grades at DePauw University show women leading men in overall points per hour. Women average 1809 points per hour while men average 1219. Rector scholars average 1.5 points per hour. One freshman man and one freshman coed both reach 51 points at mid semester.

Scarlet fever cases rise to seven in Greenscastle

Over the weekend five new scarlet fever cases were quarantined in Greenscastle, totaling seven in the past week. Named patients include Helen Arlt eight, Wanda Lou Williams four, a Tobin child of Black Street, and two Stadler children on Howard Street.

Reverend Monger to Lead Greencastle Methodist Church

Rev Albert Ellsworth Monger D D pastor of the South Bend First Methodist Church will succeed Rev C Howard Taylor as pastor of Greencastle Methodist Church. Dr Monger will assume duties after settling South Bend affairs with DePauw grad and Boston School of Theology alum. Dr C D W Hilderbrand of DePauw to serve as acting pastor. Mother's Day service to be conducted next Sunday.

DePauw Wins Its Penn Relays Section Race

DePauw mile relay team Ramsey Spina Melbourne and Axtell won their Penn Relays section against Union Fordham Bucknell Williams Mary Maryland and others finishing in 3 226 the second fastest time among forty colleges. Colgate led Class B American with 3 219. DePauw placed sixth in the Class B final and earned a Penn Relays plaque with wrist watches for each team member.

Three members of the Federal Hospitalization Board arrived in Indianapolis to inspect proposed U S locations including Bloomington and Greencaste. The Greencastle and Bloomington sites were eliminated from consideration. five towns will be visited: Indianapolis Crawfordsville Kokomo Anderson Muncie.

Two Men Sentenced for Possession of Liquor in Greencastle

Dow Cox of West Jacob street and Ephraim Patterson of Olney were fined 100 dollars each and given thirty day sentences to the Indiana State Farm at Putnamville by Mayor W. L. Denman for possession of intoxicating liquor. Penal Farm terms were suspended if fines paid and behavior remained good. Police raided Cox home about 3 pm finding three gallons of white mule. Cox employed at Indiana Portland Cement Company. Dr G Bromley Oxnam, president of DePauw University, topping a schedule of thirty high school appearances and two college talks. He to give Purdue University commencement sermon June 8 and Indiana Central College address June 2.
