Charles J. Arnold writes a humorous column noting Keith Roberts at the post office and President Oxnam of DePauw amid mushroom foraging near the campus. The piece lampoons tall tales from hunters, recounts a light banking scene, and ends with a self deprecating jab at a track judge on campus.
Ray Gard of Lafayette, arrested days ago by Sheriff Edward Eitelforge on complaint of Grant hotel authorities, was released from the county jail Wednesday afternoon. A vag rancy charge was dropped after he paid an $8.50 hotel bill. He allegedly stayed at the hotel and refused to pay. Hotel officials called the sheriff and Gard was arrested, but no charges were pressed by anyone, though hotel authorities were to be in Greencastle to file charges the next day.
John Sharp reports 130 chickens missing from his Bainbridge chicken house during the night. Sheriff Edward Bitelforge and Deputy Alvt Bryan investigated with no trace found. Chickens were mixed breeds, 75 bore Prairie Farmers tags No. 10,001. Local thefts had quieted after a period of activity among county farmers.
DePauw defeats Indiana State Normal 942-311 in a season opener on Blackstock field led by Ramsey with three firsts. Button and Carter also starred for DePauw as Porter led the Terre Haute squad.
The Putnam County Democratic Woman's Club will meet at the courthouse law library Saturday afternoon at o'clock. Everyone is urged to attend.
Partly cloudy with showers tonight and possible rain in the east Friday morning. Warmer conditions in the extreme north and east, cooler in the southwest tonight, with a cooler trend Friday across the region.
A Washington dispatch reports site examinations for Indiana Veterans' hospital will occur this week by Director General Hines or a subcommittee after Congress acts. Greencastle and Indianapolis touted as possible sites with Greencastle favored for its advantages. No final decision on a 500 bed hospital or cost, versus 150 beds at $400,000, has been announced.
Russell Scernekam a 20 year old Robinson Illinois student at Kadana Central College Indianapolis was rushed to Putnam County Hospital in critical condition after a roadside collision. He suffered a broken right leg broken pelvic bone and a punctured bladder with possible other internal injuries. He and a college friend were hitchhiking to Terre Haute to meet his parents and sister when the accident occurred near Greengastie prompting immediate family to travel to the hospital.
DePauw University students rush from Greencastle as spring vacation begins at noon and runs until Tuesday noon. Many head home for the long break.
A Cloverdale resident, W N Evens, reports in a Wednesday Herald call that Evens Tailoring Co was robbed 20 years ago, two suits stolen. One replaced suit remains as the owner’s Sunday best.
Greencastle Boy Scouts held a court of honor at the Methodist church chapel with many scouts and friends present. Harry Dowell of Terre Haute led the proceedings and Camp Krienstenstein was discussed by donor Mr. Krietenstein. Thirteen local scouts were advanced to Tenderfoot through First Class with multiple merit badges earned. Two Dorsetts filed suit in Putnam circuit court to partition and sell real estate in Putnam County.
Bloodhounds were taken to Clo verdale today but failed to track the burglars who robbed the Evens Tailoring establishment. Mrs. Paul Williams and Miss Ivy Cunningham are visiting friends in Edinburg. Francis A. Arnold has been appointed by Governor Thomas R. Marshall as a delegate to the World's Congress at Berne Switzerland.
Dr. T. J. Parsons of Indianapolis addressed a large Presbyterian gathering on Judas as the typical traitor. He argued loyalty precedes treachery and warned Christians against betraying their Lord from within the church. Union observance of the Lord's Supper was to follow Thursday at 7:30 in the Christian church.
The First National Bank of Greencastle sponsors the 1 acre Corn Club offering 10 bushels of certified seed corn to county boys aged 10 to 20. Variants Woodhorns Yellow Dent and Reeds Yellow Dent are available with detailed rules on planting, recording, costs, and eligibility.
A selected group of lay volunteers will lead a service with no sermon, using great hymns and scripture tied to the Lord's Supper. The event recalls the moment two apostles recognized Jesus at the table and aims to open eyes to Christ and to fellow Christians as co laborers in advancing God’s Kingdom.
