Al Hirt arrives home from the south while numerous residents visit relatives in Chicago and Indiana towns. Senators, editors, and travelers appear across Greencastle Bloomington and nearby communities as political figures, a Columbus-area lawsuit looms, and local society notes highlight visits from Miss Jennings, Dr. Gobin, and Mrs. Briggs among others.

E Marquis buys F C Newhouse music business while Newhouse heads to Terre Haute to pursue similar work. A large surprise party for Mr and Mrs H M Smith entertained Tuesday evening. Miss Margaret O Connell and Mr John Boland wed at St Pauls church with reception at the bride’s Bloomington Street home. They will reside in Terre Haute where the groom works. Attendants include Margaret Anna Kate Boland John Shea and Therese O Connell.
Charles Keterson, proprietor’s son, wed Pearl Strother then fled with a Southern woman. The husband learned of the elopement after returning from work to a dark home and missing wife and clock. Attorney J W Layne to seek divorce at the next court term.
Fountain county judge rules Nicholson law does not recognize individuals but traffic. Remonstrances must name an applicant and can suspend licenses for two years by filing with the county auditor. In Williamsport the ruling reopens two saloons, but the decision favors remonstrators and follows an 1840 Supreme Court ruling.
Reporter notes in the Democrat describe Edith E. Davis and John M. Rains tying the knot Wednesday morning with Majah Cullen as MC and Dr. Livingsworth officiating. The Vermillion, Edgar county pair traveled to Greencastle to marry, citing local custom and the usual parental dispute as background.
John H. Hendrix of Putnamville, near ninety, recalls arriving in 1868 and living near Putnamville. He notes a long marriage, steady life, and contentment despite farm burdens. Hendrix, a remaining immigrant from Kentucky and Southern states, remains mentally sharp and shares reminiscences of early Putnam County civilization.
Henry T. Houck died at his home October 22 1895 aged 38 from typhoid fever He was a stock trader known for integrity and leaves a widow a daughter and two sons His funeral was October 24 led by Rev Learenby with a large crowd at Boone Cemetery also notes James Whitcomb Riley finished a new poetry series for Ladies Home Journal with A B Frost to illustrate
A strong earthquake was felt from the lakes to the gulf at five twenty this morning. It caused frightened residents to flee homes and damaged structures in New Albany where part of a church wall collapsed and a pipe organ was ruined. The tremor extended north to Florida with greater intensity southward.
Thursday morning transitions reshaped two county offices as George M retired from caditor after four years and was replaced by L. Denman. Dan S. Hurst yielded county Recorder duties to Ben Harris, while Joseph Mulholland stays as auditor deputy and Jimmy Harris assists in the recorder’s office. An inauguration celebration featured cigars and fruit.
The DePauw eleven were outclassed by the Missouri Tigers 38 to 0 in St Louis last Saturday. The St Louis Post Dispatch called the game a slaughter and praised players Roller Ewing Hall Gavin and Buick while noting Captain Sandy in a full length illustration.
The law requires taxes be paid by the third Monday in April and the first Monday in November. Treasurers must return tax duplicates to the auditor the first Tuesday in November for settlement. Unpaid taxes after November Sth become delinquent and incur penalties. A 25 cent fee applies for each account filed in the Auditor's office. All claims against the county must be paid.
