Mrs. Jane Ford of Indianapolis and Asa Black of Wellington Kansas visit at Z Potters with Rev T B Anderson and wife of Wilmington Illinois. Guests include Mrs Julia Bence at Dr Bence s and Miss Ollie Birchard at J A W Paris along with several residents and relatives from grants and towns across Indiana Illinois and Kansas.
In South Greencastle the St Louis grand jury investigated suspected misconduct by Vandalia road conductors who allegedly kept mileage tickets and sold them to brokers. John R Wise testified, but indictments seem unlikely due to insufficient evidence. Walter Riley opens a barber shop amid ongoing coal famine.
Capt. J. F. Fee's Co I state militia forms part of a mass mobilization at Greencastle and Mitchell. Nearly fifty men board a Monon train for Camp Robbins near Washington, where they guard and fight in the Cannarburg area with notable bravery and incidents.
Vandalia trains bound west through Knightsville faced repeated stoppages as the strike spread. Engineer William Barr, 45, was instantl y killed by a stone through his cab window during a noon to 1 PM run. Barr, respected by Greencastle railroad men, leaves a wife and five children. the family will be pensioned by President McKeen.
The Odd Fellows defeated the Redmen in a baseball game 23 to 5 on Wednesday before a large crowd. Several spectators fainted from fatigue. no other accidents were reported. E. Henri Kleinbuch captained the Injuns in a standout performance with a white sweater and lively fielding, while T Francis Sage chased balls through center field before tiring. The Odd Fellows showed the stronger nine and won easily.
The Board is in session at the Court House to conduct county business. The June term opened with review of claims against the county. Trustee Warner seeks a loan to build a school house and his petition is under advisement. Liquor licenses for Green castle requested by Cawley Hivert Maloney and Sage were granted after compliance proof. Petitions from Lockridge Southard and Nelson to refund taxes on bank stock were discussed but not yet disposed of at adjournment.
Putnam county sends a large delegation to the Fifth district democratic convention in Columbus on June 12. A party will depart Greencastle for Bartholomew capital, with Col Matson securing rail rate. Delegates and alternates include Mill Creek F McHaffie and H H Parker. Cloverdale W E Horn J F O'Brien W H Cunningham with alternates Joe Eckels Harvey Sparks M T Flannery. Lawrence Rockhill of Fern narrowly escaped death Wednesday afternoon at Oakalla when a projecting plank from a freight car struck his face on the Big Four platform. The blow cut his nose and opened a gash above the right eye. he was knocked down but conscious. Dr Lamers treated the injuries and Rockhill credited his quick sight of the plank for saving his life.
Sullivan Democrat notes Mrs. Hattie Langdon of Greencastle spoke in Sullivan last week on Decoration Day. She delivered an address at New Lebanon and presented a flag to the first county war enlistment company.

Hon C Ed Taylor newly appointed Recorder of Deeds and chairman of the National Negro Democratic League will attend as guest of the Taggart colored club.
