William R. McKeen begins his twenty-sixth year as president of the Terre Haute Indianapolis railroad. The line has expanded from thirty-seven miles to a Vandalia system with 639 miles of main line and thirty-three miles of coal branches at Brazil.
Local notices discuss building a new courthouse, with residents Joan Christie opposing high extra taxes. The Democrat paper pledges strong news coverage for Putnam county while church activities and Christmas Eve tree program are noted along with memorial for Mrs. Kate Brown of Chicago.
Theresa Stack, fourteen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stack, died of diphtheria on December 22 after four days illness. Funeral by Father McLaughlin from the residence at 8 pm yesterday. interment at Forest Hill cemetery. A bright, intelligent pupil of St. Pauls Academy with many friends.
The College City Lodge No 9 A C A W offers sympathy to Brother John Stack and family on the loss of their youngest daughter Theresa to diphtheria. The note recalls her cheerful nature and youthful innocence and expresses hope she rests with the Great Master of the Universe in a better world.
Church notes report Tuesday night elections of lodge officers and praise for the concert by the A M E Sunday school. A Christmas tree and exercises planned for tonight to delight the church youth.
James E. Matthews of this city died en route to Florida from Asheville North Carolina. The Knights of Honor treasurer W H Burk paid $2000 to Matthews daughter Lizzie B Matthews eleven guardianship held by her mother. Burk forwarded proofs from Asheville and the full benefit was disbursed promptly.
After a lingering illness Julia Dovie Hart dies at her father’s Cloverdale home from pneumonia complicated by lagrippe. Born January 1860 she married Dr M M Hart in 1881 and leaves a three year old daughter as her husband and child survive. She was active in the Christian church and praised for her kindness as wife mother and daughter. The obituary notes her courage and resignation in death.
The column lists numerous visits and travels among local residents and guests. It notes Mrs Tdu Donan's improving health in St Louis, Mrs Elliott near death, Miss Florence Dunbar in Washington DC, several staying in Indianapolis Chicago and Terre Haute, plus travel to Waco and Decatur. It mentions community members ill with scarlet fever and asthma and Mr Naugle seeking postmaster in Clay City with support.
The Indianapolis Sentinel notes hog prices at six dollars and seventy five cents, with hogs scarce after spring floods reduced young stock. Farmers who fed hogs profit, while buyers seek lean meat over fattier hogs as corn remains cheap and pork demand grows.
The Big Four paid Thursday. Mrs. George Capsadel of Evansville attended the funeral of her sister Theresa Stack. Mrs. Robert F. Miller leaves for Indianapolis today with her sister Lola Koffel. John Morarity of Hillsboro Illinois and James Curran of Terre Haute, both veteran masons, are greeting many friends.

The Christian Sunday school hosts a supper of songs scripture readings and recitations tonight at the church. Students including Nellie Adams Oral Pierce Josie Jackson Mary Goodwin Willie Wells and others perform with Santa Claus distributing presents from the tree. A committee welcomes gifts from parents and friends for the tree and all are invited.
Mrs Maria Hart wife of Howard Hart of Cloverdale died at the Asylum for the Insane in Indianapolis last Sunday after a rapid decline in insanity. She was removed to the asylum hospital ward days before death, then brought home for burial in Cloverdale. Funeral at M E Church, Rev Whitsett officiating. She leaves a husband and a grown son and daughter.
At noon Thursday John Sweeney of Madison Township crossed the railroad at Jackson Street with a two horse wagon. A west bound Big Four freight car cut loose and crushed the wagon amid debris. Sweeney unhurt. bystanders halted the team. The crossing flagman is paid by Monon not Big Four. incident sparks call to tunnel construction and railway safety.
Mrs Hannah R Evans died Saturday December 17 at her son in laws residence in this city of old age and paralysis. Born in Bracken county Kentucky in 1805 she moved with her parents to Fayette county Indiana in SE married William H Evans in 1825 and moved to this city in 1828. Her husband died in 1854. She was a Methodist and descendant of Robert Worster the first Methodist preacher west of the Alleghenies. She leaves three children twenty two grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren.
