Coal reserves far exceed annual mining totals
A United States Geological Survey report states the nation has 4 188 600 000 000 tons of coal underground. Only 600 000 000 tons have been mined, while about 12 000 000 000 more tons have been mined elsewhere in the past. The mined amount in a century equals less than 3 percent of the remaining reserves, and at current use the coal would last 3 275 years.
