Special correspondent reports John Stewart of Canada dies of consumption at 21 in Eaton Colorado. He is buried in Greeley cemetery. The issue notes church music plans, local thrashing activity, coal vein find by John Eichmann, a new Pattee and Fowler partnership, and a push to make Eaton the Weld County seat. F D Wren president urges wool growers to attend the Colorado State Wool Growers' Association meeting in Colorado Springs on October 15 1885. He calls for unity, financial reform, and stronger protection of members amid three years of low spirits and hardship, promising a new era of industry prosperity.
The Crested Butte Gazette notes the death of Martin Van Buren Gillette, a prominent Augusta mine owner and longtime community figure. Described as energetic, kind, and principled, he was a beloved employer, friend, husband, and father who contributed to the town before his illness.
Poudre Valley Lodge No. 12 I.C. O F. mourns the death of Martin V. B. Gillette. The lodge resolves to mourning for thirty days and to transmit the resolution to the family and local papers. Signed by Winiam Benedict and James F. Freeman James M. Benedict.
Thomas J. Tiffany, ex postmaster of Bennington and school board member, vanished two years ago as $10 000 to $12 000 reportedly missing from government and private funds. Colorado officers traced him to a Weld County sheep ranch via Bennington connections, identifying him after a photograph matched Tiffany and Fulton. He was arrested at Henry F. Currier's Lost Creek ranch and moved east. Tiffany, about fifty, was respected before the disappearance.
At a regular meeting the Town Trustees received a petition from Joseph Moore to reroute the waste ditch through an alleyway and referred it to a committee. The fire bell purchase plan was given more time. The Mitchell Patton Merchandise Co petition to string a sign on Main street was opposed by the committee. A cabbages removal on a flooded Main street lot was delayed pending a drain solution. Bids for sewer pipe work were referred to Mayor West, who has authority to act, and the Union Pacific granted a freight rebate. Various local reports and notices, plus trade show news and a snake cucumber anecdote, are reported.
