Report from Weld County towns Creeley Kersey Del Monte Evans LaSalle indicates heavy losses across vegetables grains and forage. Beets escaped in places while alfalfa hay suffered. early potatoes and sod were damaged with orchards water damage noted in spots. Local crops at Big Bend suffered a delayed setback from freezing temperatures.
Farmers report heavy frost last night across Evans area. Early potatoes, corn, beets and tomatoes suffered. some fruit and plums damaged. Alfalfa and hay crops also harmed while late crops may recover this season. Windsor and Bend areas noted light damage to crops and orchards.
Knous completed a two week visit in Denver returning home to resume duties. Local officials report no incidents during the stay and note plans for upcoming community events.
Indignation rises in the Greeley Poudre district as landholders sign a protest against efforts to delay the irrigation project. The protest stems from an indignation meeting and names many district landowners, who claim delays threaten their livelihoods and the county reclamation work.
About 2006 carloads of potatoes remain in Greeley district cellars with no demand. Prices are 26 cents for Pearls and Ruralis, steady from yesterday. Last year at this time inventories were lower and prices reached $1.50, with around 7,500 cars shipped this year and over 10,000 left last year.
The Associated Relief Society at city hall agreed to suspend meetings for the summer. The group, with twenty four directors and Mrs Josephine An as president, discussed cases aided by the society and will reconvene in September. The May to April report showed cash receipts of 51.58 and disbursements totaling 51.58 with a cash balance of 212.09 and items including clothing and groceries.
At noon indications show the water franchise will pass while the saloon proposal appears close with odds in favor of the wets. Voters filled residences heavily and downtown turnout is very light.
Mr and Mrs Peter Peterson visiting Mrs Petersons parents Mr and Mrs Charles Von Rosenburg left today for their home in Frasier as their visit concluded.
A fair crowd at My Monday night saw light heavyweight Davis of Pawnee and Canada defeat Gehring of Denver, taking two straight falls in ten and a half and eight minutes. Nelson and Rae scored the other falls, while McCune of Fort Collins beat Graham of Greeley in a boxing and wrestling program that featured notable footwork and speed.
Stricken with heart failure CM Marsh aged 76 died Monday afternoon at his daughter Mrs George Harvard’s Boise Idaho home. He spent winters in San Diego with daughter Mrs Charley Marsh and was en route to Greeley when death occurred. Funeral in Greeley with multiple survivors including four daughters and a son C W Marsh. Born Pine City New York he arrived in Greeley twenty five years ago becoming a leading portrait photographer in the county.
The Tribune details a county wide crop contest for milo potatoes and sugar beets with district prizes and state level finals in Denver. Prizes range from 5 to 15 dollars per category, winners travel to the Capitol to be honored, and Greeley entries may use Ba House land.
W H Morris of Milliken Colorado grows irrigation fed crops and raises 365 acres including potatoes. He notes last year the Greeley district shipped 14000 carloads of potatoes with larger acreage this year. Potatoes are used as cattle feed and shipped nationwide by the sack ton or hundred pounds.
May 12 report notes a mass meeting at Hill's hall to publicly discuss the Fourth of July celebration. The executive Committee advances plans while merchants and residents contribute to the celebration fund.
In Kersey on May 17 Charles M. Hibbard of Denver connected with Union Pacific signal service wrecked a hand car into a crossing buggy. The crash injured Hibbard and passengers C. C. Hill and a companion. Hibbard faced a reckless driving charge, was fined $50 plus costs, and paid for the buggy damage.
A. L. Lindner of Greeley Gas and Electric told LaSalle’s Commercial club the firm will supply electric lights if granted a twenty year franchise by the town council. The proposal includes wiring LaSalle and free lighting for public buildings, at a maximum rate of 12 1/2 cents per kilowatt hour. Council action awaits its next organizational meeting with elections set for May 31.
Mrs M L Losey invites guests to a luncheon on Friday in honor of Miss Marie Frater who departs soon to study music at Oberlin College in Oberlin Ohio.
Thomas McCorkle of Fort Collins was buried under five tons of rocks when a salt storage platform gave way in the basement of the Johnson ice cream parlor where he works. He suffered several broken ribs and other serious injuries and has many friends in Greeley.
The LeGrange Sunday school presented a program featuring songs by the school, recitations by Margaret and Roland Robinson, Jessie Wadler, and talks on temperance by S. K. Boyd and Mr. Stevenson. Rev. C M. Cooper of the Windsor Methodist church delivered a sermon.
For the first time in Greeley history a street car, fully equipped, was driven on the streets as an inspection trip by Greeley Street Car company stockholders. Motorman C. L. Hartman led the test, with regular service expected soon after final preparations. Crews greased switches and completed line readiness as the Fort Collins and Boulder lines were already ahead in install progress.
City council faces protests over rail tracks on Tenth Avenue. Officials say funding is tight and will proceed only on streets where residents request the line.
Lyons May 16. A Finnish man, once thought to be the Denver murder suspect Mrs. Wilson’s killer, was found en route from Estes Park to Beacon Hill near Lyons. He rode with a driver after losing a hand region and could not speak English, later drifting to Beech Hill while authorities pursued unconfirmed reports.
Plans approved by the high school building committee call for a $90,000 English collegiate style structure. Architect Wayne Patterson travels to Denver to finalize details with Roeschlaub. Bids to be opened within ten days. main entrance on Ninth Avenue and assembly hall facing Eighth Avenue.
John B. Gullbrandt of the Flag Clothing company suffered a broken leg after assisting a sick horse to its feet at his partner HE Johanson’s home on Nineteenth Street and Thirteenth Avenue last Saturday. He was carried to a local medical facility for treatment.
A man seeking his driving horse, which was ill, was struck by the horse as it fell, breaking his right leg just above the ankle. He now moves with crutches.
A severe snow event dropped about a foot of snow on the Laramie side and roughly six inches on the Poudre side, disrupting travel and prompting local warnings.
