Interest grows in Tribune free trips contest as candidates campaign for subscriber support. Some will travel to the World Fair with car fare paid one way and many may qualify for a nearly free trip through local fundraising. Country girls studying at Greeley Normal School may choose to enter as city or country entrants, with the option to attract subscribers from both regions.
A list of candidates for The Tribune popular lady contest to win free trips to the World’s Fair grows with many favored by friends. Winners earn railroad transportation, Pullman fare, and daily expenses. credits come from new subscriptions, old subscription payments, ads, and coupons.
Sheriff Elliott escorted Mrs. Jeanette Alexander from Denver to secure a new bond for her and co defendant Jerry O Keefe of Cheyenne. The pair faced trial for robbing Oscar Anderson on a Union Pacific train last fall. Anderson died in Denver from pneumonia linked to dissipation after arranging bonds. The case proceeded on behalf of the railroad. Mrs. Alexander was released to return on the same bond.
A Tribune letter argues winter drought has damaged sidewalk grass and shrubs due to public vandalism. The author blames both sexes, cites walkers and seances on lawns, calls for stronger city ordinances, and questions municipal powers to protect greenery.
M B Knowles of Fort Lupton visited his daughter in the city and plans to move to Greeley. O E Frink, owner of the Fort Lupton creamery, will start a canning factory to handle tomatoes sweet corn and beans from about three hundred acres. Empson Canning of Longmont already has a Fort Lupton station but seeks to shift focus to Longmont. Frink aims to keep Lupton competitive by building a local factory.
O Russell of Kansas City arrives in Greeley to take charge of all F H Gilcrest lumber yards in Colorado. Greeley becomes Colorado's central office with six northern yards including Eaton Ault Windsor Fort Collins and Boulder. Russell previously ran Kansas City yards and once worked with Gilcrest in Kearney Nebraska.
Eugene Grubb outlines a future potato institute at Glenwood Springs offering prizes for best and fastest potato seed cutter. He backs the Carbondale team against the world for any amount. Weather is fine and ground perfect as four teams compete with 200 cattle and 25 two year old show steers on the range.
Six year old Charley O Connell son of Mr and Mrs M J O Connell of 530 Thirteenth street is lying with a crushed right leg and broken bone just above the ankle after being run over by a wheel scraper behind a wagon driven by George Taughton of Evans. The injury occurred as Charley and companions were returning from school Friday afternoon and he was taken to a nearby house where Dr Weaver set the broken member.
