Weld County citizens eye a widening fraud case centering on contractor Heely and the LaSalle Bridge project. Reports say Heely delivered a $5,000 bond and returned to Denver as officials prepare for further prosecutions tied to grand jury findings and related county official investigations.
A fragmented report notes discussions at a Weld County Farmers meeting in Greeley about banking influence and road matters. The minutes mention Mrs. W and Denver comments, a new law, and potential orders for fencing and twine with debate on future action and committee standings.
Windsor March 6 The trial of Russians charged with assault on J Hinkle has been postponed to March 1 because Hinkle cannot attend. He is bedbound from knife wounds said to be from companions. The dispute arose over a whiskey jug at a Russian party in St Petersburg district.
A large Roosevelt gathering at the Columbine school house northwest of Eaton drew 75 percent of attendees toward joining the Roosevelt club of Greeley. Speakers included H. E. Churchill J. C. Ewing H. Glover and Louis B. Reed. A later Eaton rally in the W. O. W. hall featured Attorney General Ben Griffith and Churchill. The Eaton Roosevelt club now counts 360 members.
Articles of Incorporation for the First Church of Christ Scientist were filed in the county clerk’s office Tuesday. The society formed nine years ago has grown steadily and now moves to become a church with officers: Mrs. EB. C. Smith president Eric Erickson vice president Miss Carrie F. Lyman secretary Mrs. C. H. Ramsay treasurer J. J. Domke on the board Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Elmer readers. Services are held in a hall of the Camfield Trust building.
J B Quisdorf of near raver was arrested Tuesday by Deputy Sheriff H Frazier for contributing to juvenile delinquency. He allegedly gave whiskey to a six year old girl and a twelve year old boy, children of ranchman Fen ley, causing both to become drunk. A physician was summoned and the girl is recovering. Quisdorf says he gave a small drink and the children later drank more after he slept. Fort Lupton Colo Mar 6. Washington has denied rural route No 3 from this post office. A route east of town covering about 26 miles was proposed and a petition may be reconsidered. Stockmen note the new stallion law took effect last August fifth, not next summer, and should be posted accordingly.
Citizens petition to establish a municipal coal yard to sell at cost, with legal review on city authority and potential charter change. Council explores light plant needs, public health reports note chicken pox measles and scarlet fever, and a fumigation policy for second hand charity items. Water meter trials begin as city and county committees plan street work on Orange Street Southeast to improve safety.
The state highway commission allocated 530 000 among Colorado counties under house bill 200, pending supreme court ruling on constitutionality. San Juan leads with 25 000. Pueblo and Heo each 20 000. Fremont and Pitkin 20 000. Weld 8 000. Denver receives none due to city limits. total funds, including legislatures’ 226 199.98, and other sums, total over 2.1 million for road building this year.
Windsor Lake in Windsor March 6 reports a rare extended freeze with ice a foot thick since November. The ice has supported many skaters and hundreds of tons were harvested for winter use. snow slowed skating but the ice remains solid. The lake, over forty feet deep, serves as a reservoir and may become a recreation site this summer.
Agricultural official C L Fitch reports strong farmer confidence on the western slope under Gunnison tunnel. He notes plans to expand potato and onion acreage, cites past glut with 50 onion cars and 250 potato cars left at Olathe, and mentions Carbondale peach blow sales at 1.75 per hundred. He spoke after farmers institutes and stopped in Greeley on return.
In Eaton on March 6 a large Roosevelt club gathering drew about 200 attendees with remarks by Colorado Attorney General Jen Griffith and H E Churchill of Greeley. Griffith urged constructive Roosevelt policies and antimonopoly action, while Churchill defended primary reform and the party’s presidential preference. After speeches, attendees crowded the rostrum, the Eaton band played, and plans for further Roosevelt meetings in Severance Ault Keota were announced, with Joseph C. Ewing of Greeley slated to speak tonight.
LaSalle March 6. H A Dennison a Civil War veteran and long time Loveland resident died at his home this morning at age 86. Known as Grandpa Dennison he had been vigorous until two months ago when pneumonia left him weakened. Survived by children living in this state, his body may be sent to Kansas for burial.
Senator Guggenheim reports Senate committee favoring 25 000 additional appropriation to raise GCreeley post office cost limit to 100 000. He notes total asks reach 225 000 with earlier 75 000 already approved and aims for a fireproof building and future action. Also notes Mrs Craig sprained hip after icy fall in Evans back yard on March 6.
