Fire at a city restaurant between Main and Eighth avenues caused the collapse of the building and damaged nearby barber shop and store. Losses totaled about 14 000 with several owners insured. The blaze was reported around 12:30 AM by Officers Brown and Mineer, and delays in restoring utilities hampered firefighting efforts.
A city water outage hampered efforts as a plug failed and hoses were laid to the scene at Griggsby restaurant and nearby shop. Firefighters arrived and by thirty minutes had the blaze under control, preventing spread to adjacent properties. belongings were lost and thieves looted during the incident.
The Camfield interests gained a majority stake in the Poudre Valley reservoir company at a Monday meeting, ousting North Poudre owners and reshaping company leadership. New officers include Joseph C. Ewing as president and A. A. Edwards as vice president, while L. C. Moore and others exit. The shift ends prior litigation over enlarging the Poudre Valley ditch and signals a settlement in the Greeley Poudre irrigation project. The company holds about 700000 dollars in assets including Douglas Lake.
The Commercial club will join the Pioneer Day parade meeting Friday at 9:30 AM at the club rooms. Colors are purple and gold, each member to receive a cane bearing the colors. Invitations expanded to 200, offering half fare on the Colorado and Southern. Twelve hundred invitations sent. stations at Loveland Boulder and Fort Collins to hold extra invites. Denver Post band to perform. Denver South line rail will haul fifty band members gratis. Weld county’s greatest celebration planned with open Baptist church rest room and lunch service. Citizens urged to decorate homes and business houses for the day.
One hundred nurserymen attending the National Nurserymen’s convention in Denver will tour Greeley Saturday hosted by the Commercial Club. Secretary McCrery presented the plan to directors who envision an auto tour of the countryside. Monday, June 20, will be Railroad Day with a banquet for officials from Linton Pacific, Denver-Laramie and Northwestern, Arlington, and Greeley Street Car Company, with speeches planned.
The Evans town board repealed the law banning baseball on Sundays despite protests from administration supporters. Mayor Behrens cast the deciding vote to keep the restriction in place while other board members split along faction lines. Also decided were fire department reorganization steps and exemptions from poll taxes to assist volunteers.
La Salle's first town board met to discuss street improvements fire protection health and police regulations. Officials appointed include treasurer R B Carpenter bond 500 health officer Dr J E Vance and street committee members W R Davis R B Carpenter and Ed Behrens. Clerk bond set at 100. several candidate filings noted.
Delegates from Greeley will travel to Sterling for the State Christian Endeavor convention and extend the invitation on behalf of the Greeley Commercial club to host the organization in Greely next year.
Windsor, June 7. Tom Perkins, city clerk, will tour Johnstown and Milliken with his moving picture show. Three nights weekly in Windsor, then traveling by car to Johnstown and Milliken for three nights each. In Milliken the act will screen at Antler's hall. in Johnstown, if no venue is found, the schoolhouse may host the exhibit.
FE. C. Connor and daughters Cry stal and Ona departed Monday for a two week stay in Elliston Town. Mr. Connor's mother Mrs. Rachael Connor will accompany them back to Greeley to establish her home there.
H Adams loses driving horse Monday after feeding short blue grass clippings from a lawn. Vets attribute four recent horse deaths to this practice as grass clippings compact into an indigestible ball. Mayor Myers returns from La Junta. Mrs Myers stays. Miss Lillian Mueller leaves for Tarkio Missouri for month visit and Tarkio College commencement.
Briggesdale, Weld County’s infant town, will gain a bank. Right lots were bought by Denver parties for a bank and a garage, with more business buildings planned. Local farmers welcome the development as Briggsdale grows toward a metropolitan future.
Shortage of river water due to lack of mountain snow drives unprecedented demand for reservoir water ahead of the usual season. Seven Lakes and Greeley Loveland will buy wholesale from Boyd lake company. stockholders to pay, water to begin tomorrow. Mrs. J F Reid of Torrington and Mrs Pearl Owens of Hugo visit Greeley for Normal commencement. Reid's daughter Janet graduates.
Farmers in Weld county who paid annual assessments for irrigation from the Milton reservoir near LaSalle may sue after the Denver Reservoir and Irrigation company went into receivership. The project, planned at 300000 dollars, was to supply Standley lake water, but only two thirds of the dam were built and no ditch work occurred when funds ran short.
The Platterene canal project in Weld County, tied to Standley Lake and other reservoirs, sought to irrigate about 100000 acres at a cost over 5 million dollars. Frederick W. Taylor was named receiver by district court after bonds issues collapsed and 46000 of maturing bonds went unpaid. Joseph Standley, company president, sues bond house Trowbridge and Niver for 2 million dollars, alleging breach of contract and damages. Attorney Milton Smith voices cautious optimism for water users, stockholders, and bondholders amid mounting financial distress.
Fete day marked the start of commencement celebrations at the Normal School with a chapel program and campus crowds. The west gate at the Tenth avenue entrance, a gift from the senior classes, was presented amid speeches by Miss Van Dorpen and Miss Wilma Henderson. Refreshments in the lilac circle followed, and evening plans included the class play Beckett at the Greene opera house and a senior promenade with alumni reunion tonight.
