A clerk discovers ten dollars unaccounted for prompting the choice to return the money. Years later a fraud emerges linking the initial sum to a broader embezzlement by Jackson, revealing a long hidden scheme at Eliot & Co. that ends with Jackson’s disappearance and the narrator’s rise.
The Yellowstone valley and its tributaries stretch from the National Park to the Missouri River, offering vast cultivation land, rich black loam soils, and abundant timber. Generals Miles and Baker are noted in mining and military history as the area develops into farms, towns, and potential steamboat navigation, with numerous river bottoms, posts, and future cities planned along Stillwater Clark's Fork Big Horn Rosebud Tongue and surrounding streams.
The Washington Anvil denounces the stimulant beverage trade as a malicious, extortionate business. It cites twelve hundred percent profits from highwines and describes adulteration with water syrup oils to reach bar quantities, arguing this harms public welfare and fuels crime. It notes police scrutiny and contrasts bread price policing with liquor fraud. The item closes with a transport update: Cheyenne to Deadwood coaches run in 52 hours.
Five masked men halted the Deadwood bound coach near the Cheyenne river and looted about two thousand dollars from passengers before blowing the iron treasure box. Hawley the driver was wounded in the side but not seriously. This follows another robbery earlier that week.
