Denver preacher visits Congregational church. Greeley reports mild weather after a cold spell. Notable items include weddings, births, deaths, a leap year social, an eagle display, and interments in Linn Grove cemetery. Also updates on fire, coal mines, and real estate transfers.
January 10 report from Platteville notes three weeks of cold weather halting outdoor work including brick laying and building. Rufus Lumry’s house and Wheeler addition projects are paused until warmth returns, farmers face car shortages delaying hay and grain shipments, and the Methodist sociable to aid the parsonage succeeds despite bad weather. The item closes with a note of regret for an old resident.
To boost attendance the college offers twenty five lessons for 5 dollars starting Wednesday January 18. A three evening weekly class will meet from seven to eight at the reduced rate, with a Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary prize for the top improver. The offer excludes commercial‑course students.
At the January drill of Company C N G E N Y the election chose First Lieutenant E N Sturdevant by unanimous ballot and Sergeant J A Taylor to Second Lieutenant leaving the third sergeant role to be filled by promotion. The captain will appoint an eighth corporal at the next drill.
U S Grant Post held a public installation of officers elect led by General A J Sampson of Denver. Absent officers were to be installed later. Miss Emily White sang Freedom's Banner, followed by an Eloqu ent address on Civil War memories and fraternity. A large banquet followed for about 300 guests, praising old soldiers and social camaraderie.
