Special correspondence describes Pullman as a landmark social experiment rivaling Saltaire and Godin. It notes vision, profitability, and housing filled with rents paid, while debating humanitarian aims versus profit and the aim to provide healthy, orderly surroundings for workers and families.
The article defends Pullman as a well managed town with 2500 workers dining at midday, rents from 6 to 16 dollars, and 2.50 per room average. It argues there is no despotism, that amenities are prompt, and that residents enjoy contentment despite critics. It notes moves toward homeowner plots and installment houses with a death cancellation feature.
Washington interview with architect Samuel Smithmeyer discusses U S architecture growth, the Queen Anne craze, and the move toward Norman, Romanesque, and Gothic styles. He backs competition for federal buildings and predicts White House expansion, plus long term durability questions for the Washington Monument.
