W B Grant a mill company book-keeper has moved his family into the former Charles Francisco home. C B James a top Larimer County Ditch farmer lives twelve miles northwest of Eaton and was here Saturday with wagon loads of supplies. J Carver of Tur Trisune visited with Ex Governor Eaton and surveyed the town. Rev J W King expects his Ohio parents next week. FE M Leeson Lev Leeson and Harrison Thorp arrived from West Virginia last Friday. Mr Thorp is an invalid seeking health benefits. J L Hume and A B Shelton have
Special Correspondent reports plastering finished on the Grover section house and the upper story of the depot with occupancy planned soon. Cattle losses include seven head killed by cars last week. Local builders advance on claims west of Thomas Ball and near Mr Mayfield’s school section as plowing continues in the warm spell.
A drive between Greeley and Eaton shows wide farm fencing with Ex Governor Eaton alone building over forty miles. More houses go up, land is being reclaimed, trees planted, and canal land nears an old settled look. Eaton reports rapid progress with new two story brick home, hotel area repurposed for dry goods, Willus Eaton’s new house nearby, artesian well derrick, flour mill active, and a large usable schoolhouse boosting prospects.
Wednesday morning last week Adam Huffsmith fell from a hay wagon rear end and broke his neck. The cause remains a mystery as no one witnessed the accident. Mrs Huffsmith and family mourn the sudden loss after he had left home for hay unloading. Dr Leavenworth reported no further clues. Huffsmith, born in Pennsylvania, moved through Iowa to Eyane in 1869.
The Greeley Cornet Band's Thursday Opera House concert drew a large crowd helped by low ticket prices. The program featured band pieces with scenic backdrops, vocal and quartette numbers, and strong audience praise for both performers and the ladies. The event was praised as a top state band performance and a successful display of local home talent.
Market report lists weekly corrected prices per 100 pounds paid by Greeley merchants for farm produce. Wheat price range and other crop values are noted, with corrections applied each Wednesday before press.
Mrs Lonie Yerkes organizer of the Greeley Musical Academy spent a few days in the city last week arranging a first class concert to be held in Greeley in about a month. She will be assisted by Professor Whiteman with a chorus of trained voices and pupils of the school under the same leadership. Mrs Grace Levering of Denver and Mrs Horace Wheeler are also expected to assist. The Penn ter Republican noted she recently returned from six months in New York City studying music at the Grand Conservatory and Technique under William H Sherwood.
The Youth's Companion reviews calendar improvements from Julius Caesar to Pope Gregory XIII and beyond. It notes leap year rules, the 1582 reform, solar irregularities, and a proposal by Professor Woolhouse for further refinement, suggesting changes extending to the year 4000 and beyond.
In Platteville from The Record the new Mapes residence is nearly enclosed and ready for plastering. Coykendall Bros bought Howard Cornell’s ranch to seed alfalfa. Robert Lee was badly hurt after a fall from a bronco and remained homebound. Jake Hoffman bought the house and lot opposite the livery stable for 225 dollars from A Heim. Dick Bingle returned with a pile driving outfit to work the dam at the head of the Independent Ditch. completion in about thirty days. A sociable at Mr and Mrs Lockard’s last Tuesday was a grand success with many attendees and several dollars in receipts unnamed. Prescriptions are reasonable at Wilson’s.
