The December 25 gathering in District No 27 featured music readings and calisthenics by students. Santa provided gifts while the class honored teacher Miss Alice Snyder with two poetry volumes. The crowd departed cheerful after a traditional Christmas celebration.
Mr. E. P. Nichols arrived for New Year in town. Frank Wyatt returns from Idaho. S. W. Bullard moves his barber shop to the Mrs. Ferguson millinery storefront adjoining. Packard of Sterling News and Horace Crafts of Fort Collins Express visit. Ed Nusbaum recovers from peritonitis. Lectures, theater tickets, and social notices fill the week as residents prepare for New Year. Production notes include Kishman opera and civic appointments, with Christmas observances and church services noted throughout.
Windsor reports Mr. Harris sold his fine-bred Duke of Windsor to Mr. L D Law and bought Prince of Windsor from T D Goss. Christmas Eve teeth and hotel life details accompany family arrivals from Minnesota and Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Harris reunite after ten years. Mrs. Harris plans Colorado residence. Sportmens notes.
Special dispatches report Jacob Welch plans a large rink on College avenue with a 40 by 160 foot building in elegant style. A mica mine is more valuable than expected and eastern and Denver capitalists seek an interest to open it. Rev Dr Spencer will lecture on The Progress of the Christian Religion this winter. County Clerk Montgomery unveils a new county map showing section township and district boundaries.
Longmont reports include county clerk B Newman spending the Sabbath in Longmont, E Barnard filling a Windsor clerk role in Fort Collins, and local club planning a leap year ball at Zweck Hall. Schools resume January 5 while new bake shop and real estate office openings appear, plus church notes and skating rink opening with a large crowd and band.
About 125 masked revelers attended the Hook and Ladder party with Fisk's Quadrille band providing music and supper. A Sunday School Institute led by Rev. H P Case of Colorado Springs was held at the Congregational Church.
The caucus nominated George E. Wilson for mayor and trustees Robert Tracy J C Strahern Davis Ayres and R E B Smith. Ayres withdrew to back George Litch. Brush officials urged joining the new county with Fort Morgan for representation. Several dignitaries from Brush and Greeley visited Sterling to press their case. Fort Collins Courier praised by local editor.
The fifth annual meeting of the Colorado State Horticultural Society will be held in Denver January 9 10 1882 at the County Court House. The program covers reports discussions on horticulture fruit and forestry with lectures on grape culture small fruits irrigation floriculture and vegetable culture. The box will be open for questions and many papers will be presented and debated. The latest on General Grant property shows Vanderbuilt pursuing action to protect the estate. The Yellowstone Park superintendent moved squatters and burned several ranches near the border ejecting intruders with police aid. one mountaineer Buckskin Joe was arrested and sent to Wyoming.
Advertisement extols Dr Bo sanko's Cough and Lung Syrup as a cure for consumption and all respiratory ailments. It claims relief for coughs colds bronchitis and pains from dust. Price listed as 50 cents and sold by Mason and Kyle.
