John J. Lowell of Idaho endorses Weld county's potato inspection system and the creation of an inspector's office. He argues dealers share fault with farmers for inferior stock, and that careful dealer selection could solve much of the problem. He notes similar tensions in other potato regions and emphasizes joint responsibility.
The Mexican national railways, government owned, grant $30,000 gold to the YMCA of Mexico City for its railroad department. The project includes a $175,000 building, to become the largest YMCA structure in Latin America, aiding thousands of railway employees including many from the United States. Governor Creel supports the YMCA in Chihuahua, with North American officers overseeing the second largest facility. Physical training has been introduced by the association.
Windsor report notes Minnie Crossman, under age, required her father James Crossman to consent before marrying John Campbell of Loveland. Consent was given and the wedding occurred in Loveland Monday night.
Frank Wisner aged 35 killed himself in Trinidad last week. He had been a clerk in Greeley before moving to Summitville Indiana where his family currently resides. Wisner left Greeley in January after domestic troubles and was last seen Saturday night. His Indiana family has been notified.
Mrs. Dunham, soon to be 93, has donated a warm comfort to the Tisdel memorial room at Greeley hospital. Last winter she made two more comforts for the same rooms and now works on a new piece destined for children. She lives with her son E. L. Dunham and remains bright and active.
A young Greek man calling himself George Peanuts enters the county jail during mealtime after a brief confrontation with Deputy Sheriff Peterson and Patrolman Ahrens. He explains he is hungry and claims no work, smiling as he is escorted to the jail door and booked.
President Z X Snyder of Normal announced contracts for a new training school will be let in the middle of next month. The building will lie north of the Guggenheim project and the Guggenheim structure will sit east of the main building on Eighth avenue with industrial arts use. Architect talks between Greeley and Denver continue as Guggenheim commits about fifty thousand dollars, while Normal officials have not fixed the final cost.
F L Clifton reports return from Empire reservoir seven miles southwest of Orchard after nine weeks restoring headgates washed out months ago. The 3000 acre reservoir will withstand pressure when filled. property losses from initial breach run to thousands. The company plans to fill the reservoir soon.
In the county coyotes become bold with frequent farm visits during heavy snow. H. B. Orms of near Ault killed three coyotes near his kitchen door. Community-level coyote hunts are being organized across the region.
A small crowd met Monday night to consider the constitution drafted by the Commercial club committee for adoption or rejection. The constitution was adopted and twenty four directors were appointed. Mayor George Houston chaired. Father Casey and Rev. Lace proposed changes and Mrs M A Houston was named in place of the mayor for charitable work recognition.
The Associated Relief board met after an open session with Mrs. Josephine Cheeseman as chairman. Directors listed include James W. McCreery, Marion Van Dyne, C. E. Carter and others. The group limited representation to the municipality of Greeley and set a follow up meeting in the county courtroom next Monday at 4 o'clock.
In Weld county district court the trial of T. J. Leftwich for assault with intent to kill D. Austin of Loveland opens. The state contends the attack lacked provocation while the defense argues Austin provoked Leftwich with vile language and that tension led to the shooting not the assault. Juries include R L Ozmont and others.
State witnesses outline that J J Leftwich shot Austin after Austin touched the back of the chair. District Attorney Carlson asserts Austin was intoxicated but not drunk and that Leftwich fired almost immediately, while witnesses defend Leftwich as a humane protector of citizens and animals in Fort Collins.
Attorney Rhodes opened with a peroration on withholding alleged facts in the case statement. He stated Leftwich is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and faces a second assault count.
Ault Nov 30. W F Ratekff of Greeley paid J A Jacobson of Lucerne 14000 for fifty six acres, the highest price yet paid for land near Ault. The tract includes a four room cottage and factors point to prosperity as Ault area shows strong growth and encouraging outlook for farmers. The land bought is among the most valuable in this end of the county.
The State Normal school will graduate a class of seventeen on December 9 at the close of the first term. About 250 students are in the senior class this year, with another class slated for early spring. Some graduates will receive Normal college diplomas and several will earn a Master of Arts degree as the school continues to fill teacher calls across the state.
Buster Brown and Tige visited Ramsay store and Unity church auditorium last Saturday to entertain youngsters and many adults. The crowd packed the hall as tricks and vaudeville delighted attendees. observers agree a return engagement would win unanimous approval.
The Denver Laramie and Northwestern railroad plans passenger service from Denver to Greeley starting January 1 with one daily round trip for a few weeks and a second daily train after. S K Martin, D L N W official, announces admission to the Trans Missouri Freight Bureau, making all stations on the line Colorado common points for rates. A new freight and passenger office opens at the Railway Exchange, Seventhteen and Champa.
Milliken, a new town in Weld county twelve miles southwest of Greeley on the Denver Laramie railway, will formally open December 18. The opening will feature a band concert sports flag presentation and numerous attractions with an expected crowd of up to 5000 people and special excursion trains. Distinguished guests including the Real Estate exchange Governor Shafroth Mayor Speer and officials will attend.
W. W. Hall arrested by Marshal Eugene Williams on a charge of abducting 17 year old Jeanette Dudley from Cheyenne. He will be tried in Greeley with a warrant to be filed in Justice Hatch's court. Jeanette's father Fred Dudley favors Greeley for a potentially better conviction. Dudley and his daughter stay in Greeley until the case concludes.
Ten families from Minnesota Nebraska Iowa and northern Colorado settled on the Shoshone Wyoming project in October and began homes. Six lots were sold in Powell government townsite. Builders and engineers assist settlers with building locations farm plans and next season crops while Garland and Powell towns compete and farmers organize for social educational and product-disposal efforts. Newspapers in Garland and Powell promote homeseeker advantages and civic pride.
About twenty five farmers will incorporate the Farmers' Club Weld County Protective association to protect county farmers from fire losses. The company will be the first organized under the 1909 laws and losses will be pro rated among members.
Henrietta Byrne widow of the late Rev Francis Byrne died at her Littleton home Sunday. Known across Colorado Episcopal parishes as "Mother Byrne" she and her husband aided pioneer churches. Her grandson Lester Smith of 304 Thirteenth Avenue learned of her noon death.
