Earthquake Tremors Wrack Cimarron Valley. Cattle Menaced
The Montrose Messenger and Register report a July earthquake at the Cimarron divide near Cimarron post office. A one by two and a half to three mile swath was upheaved with upturned rocks, deep fissures, a raised lake bed and tangled groves. Stillman Schildt found 25 to 30 cattle dead or trapped, while others were driven to solid ground with improvised trails. Professor Farnham described the scene to Tribune Republican reporters, noting widespread cracks, sunken and raised land, and altered streams across about two square miles.
