Eaton farmers pursue sugar beet and wheat planting as the railroad expansion and factory upgrades spur activity. American seed trials, imports from Germany decreasing, and a 1500 acre beet program accompany shifts in local banking, administration and labor as merchants report improving business and optimism for a strong year.
Colorado led the beet sugar output in the 1904 05 campaign with 49 606 tons of 209 722 total. Michigan second produced 46 659 tons, California 41 540, Utah 25 274, and Nebraska 13 355. no other state topped 10 000 tons. The Denver News notes the industry is well past experiments and promising for future growth.
Mr. and Mrs. John Platt celebrated their fiftieth anniversary at the home of their son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. George Annett with seventy five guests. The couple, long residents of western New York and Colorado, were married near Rochester and now live in Greeley.
The city council adjourned after approving a $30 565 annual appropriation bill up from $29 225 last year and heard petitions for water mains east of the Normal School. A proposal to swap sixteen water rights for stock in Greeley Irrigation was referred to the city attorney, and the treasurer’s quarterly report was filed.
A new railroad spur will run north of the city to serve the starch factory and Clayton pressed brick yards. A beet dump may be built under the hill to avoid long uphill hauls, with possible extension to the sugar factory. The beet dump will benefit Pleasant Valley farmers by saving over a mile of travel. Charles Lofgren of the Star Grocery visited Cripple Creek last week with a car load of potatoes.
A Colorado College hosted conference of Colorado scientists will occur April 28 and 29. Leaders from leading eastern universities will address attendees including Dr. John M. Coulter of the University of Chicago and Professor A. W. Richter of the University of Wisconsin.
County Superintendent L H Harrison reports state supervisor Catherine L Craig secured free flower and garden seed from Congressman Brooks for Weld county schools. Seed aim to beautify schools and homes, used in Arbor Day exercises. New district No 66 welcomed Miss Gladys Pressley as teacher. Carr district opened a nine month term, unusually late due to sparse settlement and winter travel risks.
County commissioners propose appointees for Water Division No. 1 districts 1 through 4 and 6. Caldwell of Brush, Jump of Platteville, Armstrong of Fort Collins, Allen of Larimer County, and Autrey for district 6 are named. district 5 decision pending. Governor will appoint. District Court Clerk Frank Madden prepares May term docket.
The Water Supply and Storage company completed a new dam across Cache la Poudre at Shipp's head of the Larimer county ditch. Engineers Stein and Hedke designed a concrete dam with curved top, reinforced headgates, and a sand sluice to keep debris out. Four roll-on gates operate from one mechanism, with a front water tight joint, a 2 foot gate height above flood level, and a breakwater grille to shed floating material. The project, costing about $20,000, replaces the prior structure and aims to ensure a continuous water supply even in floods. Ft. Collins Courier reports.
The Greeley Reds defeated the Kuner Prides of Denver 12 to 7 at Island Grove Park in front of about four hundred spectators. Colgrove pitched well early, allowing one hit and one run through four innings before the visitors rallied as the Reds eased into the season opening win.
The Kenmore farm portion north of the road and south of the river, totaling 212 acres, was sold last Monday by Clint O Heath of Denver to B R Hanbury of Longmont for 17000. The purchase includes recent improvements valued at about 12000. Once Northern Colorado’s premier dairy farm, the estate also bred Holstein cattle and fine stock, including Berkshire and Poland China hogs.
The Commercial club likely to discuss city purchase of the county court house for a city hall. County commissioners are studying how to add space, weighing adding a wing or demolishing and enlarging, with a possible sale if the city makes a fair offer.
The annual Colorado College catalogue, 110 pages, outlines Liberal Arts, Engineering, Music and Arts work, noting new courses and better equipment at the Engineering School. Cutler Academy has a separate catalogue. Greeley Elks entertained Fort Morgan candidates with a mule escort to the lodge, involving four victims: T. F. Grace, Dr. Wooster, Frank Critz, and William Davis.
Charles Phelps of Phelps Brothers left Friday evening for his old home in Monmouth Illinois. His health has not been good for some time, which largely prompted the trip.
