Expensive CAS Unit Aimed at Ending Midair Collisions
The aviation industry introduces the Collision Avoidance System CAS with electronic receivers on each aircraft to warn pilots of nearby planes. By using a master clock and radio beacons, CAS would give pilots time to dive or climb, potentially preventing midair crashes. Estimated costs range from 8,000 to 50,000 dollars per plane, with jetliners higher, and first private models around 8,000 dollars.

West German markets shuttered before elections
West German foreign exchange markets were asked to close until after the Sunday elections to halt a run on the mark. The Bundesbank announced the shutdown as speculative bets suggested a possible revaluation. The mark traded around 25 cents per dollar with speculation of 27 to 28 cents. Chancellor Kiesinger defended keeping the mark steady, while Willy Brandt urged revaluation to correct undervaluation. London report notes a recent watchdog isolation at an Atlantic shore.
