A Russian woman and three young children were found at 916 Fourth Avenue in poverty with no furniture or food for days. The husband, a concrete mixer, is hospitalized with pneumonia and not expected to survive, while the mother is in poor health. County commissioners were alerted to provide aid.
A simple wedding will take place at 7:30 PM in Denver at the home of Mr and Mrs W H Shaw. Miss Nellie Carr will marry Barle Day in the presence of relatives. Return to Greeley to reside after the ceremony. Barle Day is a longtime McCutcheon Hardware employee.
Orange Hal of Greeley owned by J Titler won the Interstate Fair free-for-all pace in three heats at Colorado with times 9 3 4, 10 1 4, and 11 3 4. Hal Collins, another Greeley sire offspring, took the three-year-old pace in Denver while Nordica faded from the front tier.
Preparations are complete for Ault’s upcoming carnival and smoker on Friday. Ed Davis of Fort Collins will wrestle Kiank of Ault, with other bouts featuring Gilcey and McElroy, Jensen and Murphy, and Murphy and Mimack. Townspeople rally to draw a large crowd as Greeley may send visitors by car.
Grover area farmers plan extensive winter wheat planting next year led by H. T. Nutt with 1000 acres. E. C. Abbey adds 125 acres south east of town, W. R. Avery 65 acres with 20 more planned, Charles Carver 70 acres, Greenbrier ranch wheat area to be planted again. Additional growers include BR Roseborough with 30 acres and W. D. Anderson with 40 acres.
Neil Lindsay, wanted on parole in Nebraska, was picked up at the depot last night by Patrolman Clark after allegedly breaking his parole. Mrs. Campbell Patton, visiting her son in Greensburg, Ind, left for Topeka, Kan, to visit before returning home.
Joe Marshal of La Salle was shot in the legs by Chester Smith half a mile east of LaSalle while three other men with him fled from a melon patch. Marshal was treated by Dr Vance and taken to Greeley hospital. Smith was arrested but faces no charges. The incident follows ongoing complaints about melon thefts in the county. Mrs Barhyte and Miss Florence Barhyte left for Cleveland after visiting Mrs R D Tyler.
A car driven by Elmer Rust skidded and overturned near Godfrey Bottoms at midnight stopping in the Union Pacific grade. Rust died instantly, Deputies Hobart Frazier and Charles Peterson were crushed beneath the vehicle, Merten Gross escaped unharmed. The accident happened while responding to a riot call from Firestone.
Deputies Peterson and Frazier rode in the center of a tilting car to safety, clinging to small seats as the vehicle turned turtle. They were alerted by Firestone reports of a riot and a shooting around 11:30 pm Saturday. They pursued a suspect with Rust Camfield and Merton Gross, traveling toward Firestone.
At Firestone on Saturday night a saloon fight broke out when strikers entered seeking beer. William Gaines and others were involved. Goines was wounded in the wrist as bottles flew and guns were drawn. Deputies arrested Goines Proffitt and Gervis, all Union men, and jailed them in Greeley. Frank Hennigan was also arrested in Greeley after a train arrival.
Four non union Mexican miners fought with several strikers in Frederick. After buying beer, the Mexicans were accosted by union men and opened fire. The men dropped the keg and fled toward the mines. All are jailed and to be charged with assault with intent to kill.
Kent Tisdel a farmer six miles southwest of Greeley was thrown from his wagon when his team bolted after a street car near Twelfth Avenue and Eleventh Street. He suffered severe bruises while the wagon was smashed and the horse team escaped. Witnesses helped him to a physician for treatment.
Greeley police captured a score of vagrants at the Clayton cement works. Most are professional panhandlers and will be assigned to the chain gang. Citizens suffer from panhandling this season as tramps pour in from across the state, keeping police busy.
A. J. Condon was cranking his automobile in front of his home last Saturday night when the crank fired back and fractured his wrist. He received medical attention and the fracture is described as not particularly severe.
The Congregational church in the city hosts a Brotherhood supper to mark its founding anniversary. Tomorrow evening the event runs from 6 30 to 6 30 with addresses by Dean E S Parsons of Colorado College and Ozora S Davis D D.
The Denver Laramie and North Western road will operate trains to Weld County Fair in Greeley on Denver Day September 28. A one way fare will be charged for the round trip.
R. L. Simpson returns from a two week business trip to Chicago. He plans to resume work and resume duties upon return.
Miss Fannie Mayne and H W Sizer were secretly married at 10 30 this morning by Rev W A Philips at his home. The bride, daughter of Mrs Nancy Mayne, wore a wisteria travel suit. The couple will live in Nederland and later may move to Boulder area.
Funeral services were held at the Clayton home at 2 30 Sunday afternoon for Henry Paul Clayton thirteen months old son of Mr and Mrs W L Clayton Rev John Doane and Rev R J Hunter conducted the services Mrs J M B Petrikin sang pall bearers were Bernice Ramsay Helen Ernst Frances Miller and Margaret Mc Arthur
Weld county's fair opens next Monday and runs through Friday with grand plans led by Secretary Dan March. Highlights include four generations of horses owned by John Caughlin and fast northern Colorado track events under a field of department superintendents headed by Charlies Deffke and T. J. Hall, with varied exhibits across agriculture, horticulture, arts, and concessions.
Greeley beat Fort Lupton 5 to 1 to even the series at one win apiece. A decisive third game will determine the county championship.
The LaGrange Country Club met at Mrs. Charlies Ford's home last Thursday afternoon with nineteen members and three guests present. Mrs. Eldredge presented Women and Economics and Mrs. Baker spoke on Esquima. Miss Eva Ford discussed Colorado Springs. A social hour and refreshments followed. The next meeting is set for October 6 at Mrs. E. H. Browns.
S Sutor narrowly escaped death when his traction engine plunged into the Platte River at the Sanford schoolhouse bridge. The bridge gave way beneath him as he stood on it, breaking timbers pinned him to the engine and caused a deep cut in his right leg. A similar fatal bridge accident occurred here two years ago involving J Williams.
Fort Lupton citizens consider funding an interurban electric line from Denver to Greeley with extensions to Longmont and Estes Park. A construction firm pledges 2 million dollars in materials, with 10 thousand dollars available from Denver capital, pending city approvals and involvement from the Greeley Commercial Club. If extended to Estes Park, tourism would gain a major boost.
