Priests Leaving Priesthood Questioned By Study
A survey by Rev. Eugene Schallert at the University of San Francisco shows that more than 3% of American priests who left the priesthood did so not mainly over celibacy. The study finds dropout priests held beliefs as strong as those who stayed, and celibacy was not the primary cause. The report notes many dropouts embraced post-Vatican II ideas yet felt unable to apply them.

A device developed by Argonne National Laboratory will translate magnetic tape symbols into patterns of raised dots for blind readers. The instrument, smaller than a portable typewriter, uses a moving belt to present the dots for reading, expanding accessible literature for the blind.

Prisoner Sends Post Card After Escape
An escaped prisoner mailed detective Craig Carucci a postcard saying I guess it's goodbs for a while. Joseph Larean, held by West Stortford police in July, had promised to send a card if he escaped. He escaped late last month in Manchester before a court appearance. The card showed an airport scene in a Middle Atlantic state.
