Budget Body Starts Hearings on 1931 Federal Bills

The Budget Bureau begins hearings September 9 to pare down estimates for 1931 spending while Hoover aims to keep total federal outlays near 1929 level of 3.848 billion dollars. Major departments report, with key appropriations for defense, navy, public buildings, Mediterranean fruit fly measures and other inherited totals shaping a potential 4 billion year. The process will publish estimates if Congress transmits the budget in December.

Pierce Sept 3. Mr and Mrs I H Foxter returned home from a two week visit with relatives in Town. Beatrice Priddy leaves for Los Angeles to teach. She visited her father L N Priddy and siblings. A S Southwick family from Diller Neb and Rawleigh Southwick with son Gail spent two weeks here and at Fort Collins Loveland. Gertrude Mack visited her brother Jan and sister Wort Collins. Part of the time was spent at the mountain.

Loveland Girls Choose Roaming Life Over Schooling

In Windsor on Labor Day eve two Loveland girls aged 17 and 16 ran away from home amid schoolday pressure and strict discipline. They sought shelter from rain at the Ferguson home three miles south, were taken to Windsor after muddy roads, refused to return home or attend school, asked to be placed in reformatories, and were eventually returned to Loveland with their father arriving after a street dance. A man at a concession offered marriage to one but she refused.

San Juan Mate Declares Ship Sank in 2 Minutes

Passenger Tulee testified at a steamboat hearing that the liner San Juan sank in about a minute and a half after being rammed by the tanker S J Dodd near Santa Cruz. He said life equipment was adequate but there was no time to use it as blasts were heard and panic rose.
