Heavy rain swells the Big and Little Thompson and St Vrain rivers as they flow into the Platte, flooding Weld County towns. Authorities warn of bridge losses and widespread evacuation from Erie to Frederick with the crest near sundown. Officials report 2,000 to 7,000 second feet moving into the Platte, threatening LaSalle and surrounding areas.
Torrential rains along a 200 mile front of the eastern Rocky Mountains caused widespread flooding across Colorado. Morrison, Eldorado Springs, and Colorado Springs faced severe damage with homes washed away, bridges destroyed, and transportation severed. Rescue efforts continued as authorities feared fatalities among the missing, while towns battled floodwaters and engineers worked to restore roads and services. The disaster inundated creeks and canyons, isolating communities and prompting multiple evacuations and urgent repairs.
Mrs Kathleen Boyd 20 of Louisville and her husband Dr Walter Boyd 35 were in a car wreck on the Louisville Lafayette highway when the vehicle plunged into a 20 foot deep water hole washed out by Coal Creek floodwaters. Mrs Boyd died at the scene, her neck broken and skull crushed. Dr Boyd was critically injured and later incapacitated, attempting to rescue his wife before seeking help. The road had washouts from flooding and the accident occurred in darkness as the car struck the pit.
Greeley recorded 0.49 inches of rain between 3 am Saturday and 4:20 pm, raising the total since Friday to 1.479 inches at the Public Service substation on the city’s west edge. C B Benedict reported 24 hour totals: Benedict farm 2.72 inches, Fort Lupton 2.25 inches, Brighton 2.19 inches, Keenesburg 1.65 inches.
Greeley public schools will open Wednesday for the 1932 1930 school year with ten new teachers filling vacancies. Senior high adds full and half time staff, junior high and grade schools split 122 district faculty plus 26 additional full time employees. New hires include Miss Cathrine Theuli to teach French and Latin and Naomi Grant to lead English and speech, replacing resignations.
The Grueley Tribune will not publish Monday due to Labor Day. Business houses and offices will close as on Sundays. Post offices close Sunday and Monday, but mail will be distributed to boxes. banks and city county offices remain closed.
Rev. Stuart Paterson, age 30 and single, arrived in Grealey Friday evening to take the pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church. He will preach Sunday morning at the church while staying at the Campbell hotel, after coming here from Odgboldt, Ala.
District Judge Jerle W. Clark held Darwin Dyer in contempt for failing to pay $20 weekly alimony since April 1940. He was ordered to post a $1,500 bond and face court on September 12 to show cause why he should not be jailed. Grover, Mrs. Dyer, and the custody of arrears were noted in the divorce alimony case.
Estes Park real estate man Homer E. James arrived in Greeley reporting the heaviest September rain in 63 years. He noted calm weather after September began, described canal highway damage at two points near the canyon end, and observed rockfalls affecting motorists and train arrivals from the east bound for Colorado mountain holidays.
Train service resumed in the Greeley area after tracks between Pierce and Nunn were washed out Friday night. No. 8 Pony Express reached Greeley at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with No. 38 and No. 24 behind, and No. 4 Denver front moved through. Bridges were damaged by floodwater but not destroyed. crews repaired wood damage and rerouted eastbound La Salle Julesburg trains via the Burlington line. The City of Denver arrived at LaSalle from Chicago around Saturday morning as floodwaters affected multiple lines north and west of Millan.
Farmers along Owl Creek were warned Saturday afternoon of a flood crest moving down Owl Creek toward the rich irrigated area east of Eaton and Launderd. Eaton ditch opened its spillway to Lone Tree run off from the Pierce-Ailt floor causing the ditch to overflow at the W. W. Stewart place four miles out and one mile north of all. Owl Creek Jonny Lone Tree about one mile north of Koto.
Miliken residents warned as Big and Little Thompson rivers threaten flood levels. By 2:30 p m one family had evacuated the river bottoms near Milliken while others remained. Water reached Elam Merchandise, bridges impassable, and limited escape possible via the north bank. Local families urged to evacuate before crest, with telephoned pleas to hurry from Eloavy family in Delta area.
Patrol closes Big Thompson Canyon road after flood damage estimated over 100000 dollars. Detours set via routes to Cheyenne and Loveland as water covers shoulders and portions up to 18 inches deep. Windsor hosts a Labor Day program featuring a 10 AM parade for seniors and veterans, 10 AM agricultural exhibits in the theatre building, 11 AM softball at the junior high, 11 AM horseshoe tournament at Reynolds & Thompson, a noon water fight, 7 PM band concert at Fifth and Main, and evening boxing matches.
Heavy rains caused Swift Streams to overflow US Highway 6 between Nye and Pierce, blocking Nunn and Pierce roads and stranding numerous transport trucks at Ault and near the Port of entry. By dawn water receded slowly. shoulder embankments and railroad ties were exposed as patrols aided motorists, with major flooding affecting Pierre and surrounding farmland.
