Oasis ranch near Grover Colorado fences off 2,500 acres with half irrigated, yielding 26,000 sacks of spuds 14,000 bushels grain 1,600 tons alfalfa and wild hay and five cars of cabbage. Manager Henry Thompson notes potential $40,000 crop value and rejects $107,000 for the ranch.
Mose Stone remains locked out of his home due to a residence quarantine and has lived with only a telephone contact for ten days. His child contracted diphtheria, died, and the family avoided spread through timely treatment. the quarantine sign will stay for three weeks.
J. A. Hickman owner of a coal and feed store on Seventh street sold his business yesterday to Harris and Keller from Seymour Iowa. The new firm will operate as Harris Keller and move their families to Greeley to establish residence. Hickman will pursue other business ventures.
The Greeley District Potato Growers association held its first regular meeting since permanent formation. Over twenty-five commission men attended. new directors include P. B. Boyle, R. Patterson, B. Middleton, and C. W. McKinley. An executive committee was chosen with Patterson as president. Inspectors at loading stations will have power to reject inferior goods and act as sole arbitrators, paid by commission men, about a half dollar per car for fees.
The Medicine Bow national forest in Wyoming is to be renamed to carry the Medicine Bow title. A public sentiment survey via newspapers is requested to gauge subscriber views on the proposed name swap with Cheyenne national forest. Suggestions may be sent to local papers or the Fort Collins forest supervisor by November 15, 1909.
A Windsor school party on December 26 hosted by Miss Gladys Chipman drew a crowd of seventh and eighth graders including Misses Alan and Davis. The event featured a lively social atmosphere and was reported as a fine time by attendees.
Don Nicholas Franco two month old son of Mexican beet workers died Saturday in Eaton from stomach trouble and was buried Sunday.
The dispute over negligence of a conservator for Jacob Leitz of Platteville ended with an out of court compromise. Bondsmen J. H. Wesley and George A. Hodgell paid $500 to the county as settlement after argument over damages for an industrial life policy that lapsed and left no cash value.
The M. J. Neill Furniture company window display features watercolor sketches by Mrs Ernesti with two works by G M Houston and paintings by Professor Ernesti. His Indian subjects painted from life are praised while the timber scene with violets draws local interest. Houston also offers several noteworthy pictures.
Sam Woland resigns after two years as deputy sheriff. Sheriff Florance names H. L. Frazer to fill the vacancy. Woland plans to return to business in Ault while Frazer, a Greeley native, is deemed well qualified. Deputy Charles Peterson remains in service. two other paid deputies exist, with on-call regional sworry support. Civil work keeps officers busy. expected earnings may reach a thousand dollars this year.
Farmers store rather than ship potatoes due to a car shortage in Greeley. Commission men report no empties and refrigerators scarce. Union Pacific reportedly rushed 500 empty refrigerators westward for the fruit crop, leaving a local shortage and risk of loss if cars are frozen or misallocated.
The new Commercial Club directors met with seven of nine members present. They discussed supporting a high class winter musical program, aiding a charitable association, and limiting scope to avoid overextension. A plan outline from Rev. Lace and Rev. Paul Purcell in Iowa aims to bring a large group of land seekers to view bargains in northeastern Wid county.
Prof P R Pickruhl a renowned musician from New York City who founded the Pickrohl College of Music and led it for eighteen years says Greeley is unmatched and plans to settle there. He has opened a music school at 806 Ninth Street and expects to join local musical circles.
J Co Hubbard of the Big Bend 4 district reports the purchase of 2 275 head of sheep at Wagonmound New Mexico for winter feeding. He also moved fifty head of cattle which will be grazed on his ranch in the district.
Attorneys Kelly and Ewing reached an agreement with Union Pacific in the condemnation suit against the Conroy estate over land taken for a LaSalle roundhouse site. The railroad has bought a replacement property for Mrs. Conroy and will cover moving expenses.
Dilatory tactics in Weld County drive costs as Methodist Brotherhood notes the dispute. Elks propose two exchanges with the county over the Camfield corner and adjoining church property, seeking fair value amid options expiring November 1. The county would gain a portion of the frontage while the Elks demand consideration for the church and earlier terms.
In Johnstown on October 26 Fred Peil allegedly stabbed George Kerber during a dispute over a keg payment for beer consignments. Kerber lies dying in a Longmont hospital as Peil awaits murder in the first degree arraignment.
