Walter Chandler sues for 14500 after being dragged from a ditch side on a Weld County road near Nunn. He claims the dam caused his buggy to crash, fracturing his right wrist and hand and crippling him for life. The suit targets the irrigation company for leaving a yawning roadside chasm.
Bumpson’s canning factory will have enough work to keep it operating until about January 1. The yard is busy with tomatoes and the unusually late run, due to a lack of a killing rest, extends the season. Old residents note the late tomato run is unusual. After the tomato stock finishes, cabbage work will sustain operation until the year’s start.
Special to the Daily Tribune reports that A B Owens of Bliss ranch near Ault had his right hand crushed in a runaway incident, necessitating amputation of a middle finger. Dwight Hazelitt, pawing at J B Simpson ranch, stepped on a wall fragment hurting his foot with risk of infection.
County Judge George H. Bradfield aims to strengthen juvenile court probation in Weld County. Nine probationers are monitored with a strict one month period to show improvement or face removal to the Industrial home. Relapses end further probation and placement follows, ending renewed leniency and preserving court dignity.
Greeley High School ranks its first team for the season with captains and players named including Benton Rice McKinney Hall and Brush Coon Parks Hun ter M Balch Bailch and Grant listed for backs ends guards tackles and centers. Eaton coached by Professor Black will travel. the game kicks at 2 30 pm and opponents weigh in at 154 pounds per man versus 153 for Greeley. The Eaton schedule shows October at home against Eaton Loveland October 16 Cheyenne October 23 Longmont October 30 Fort Collins November 6 Boulder November 13 Sacred Heart College November 25 at home and the grounds will be watered and kept in good shape.
The arrival of three cement cars at 5 30 Wednesday afternoon relieved the local shortage. Builders resumed sidewalk work Friday morning and have already ordered extra consignments to cover emergencies, so the city will not be cementless again.
Levelland October 7 A sack of potatoes from Stout grown by Patrick Butler without irrigation arrives here. The potatoes are large uniform and plentiful, potentially harming Greeley's reputation as a place for fine produce. Butler holds a large quantity and calls the crop magnificent.
Willie Neff a 14 year old nephew of Mrs. Lauridson was struck over the right eye by a horse hoof while in a pasture. The blow broke the bone near the eye but no fever has appeared and doctors hope to save his sight. A second accident in the same district saw seven year old Margaret Robinson fall from a beer wagon with minor injuries.
The Fortnightly Musical club opens its winter season with a strong recital by Prof. Frederick Schweikher. His mastery over the instrument and refined interpretation of difficult selections impressed attendees at the First Congregational church, especially his renditions of the Mendelssohn march.
The Weld County Sabbath School association holds its annual convention at United Presbyterian church in Greeley starting tonight at 7 30 and continuing to Friday afternoon and evening. Officers include Rev J M Wylie president and Rev E Payne vice president with Dr J K Miller treasurer Miss Louise Seelbach secretary and Rev H McMillan missionary.
Ben Carter, recently convicted for bootlegging, faces county court charges after being caught selling liquor to a woman in a local rooming house. He earned about $3 from two bottles, with roughly $1 profit, as federal authorities loom if county action proceeds.
Lee Mitchell of near Baton reports the largest beet yields known in northern Colorado this season. Twelve acres produced thirty six tons per acre and forty one acres yielded twenty four tons per acre, a district record unlikely to be matched this digging season. The average yield remains strong and beets continue to show rotation benefits for following crops.
City council and committee plan a Saturday meeting to review fire engine specifications for Greeley. Five engines have failed to satisfy, prompting talk of a specially manufactured unit with enough power for sandy streets and heavy urban use. Representatives of several firms claim they can build the required parts and bids may be accepted.
F W Angier of the Union Pacific passenger department in San Jose extols Colorado State Normal School grounds in Greeley as ideally located and superior if compared with famed California university grounds. He claims equal funding would yield the world's most beautiful educational grounds.
Mr Angier, a well known California educator and traveler, told a Tribune reporter that Colorado has strong educational institutions but the Greeley State Normal stands out. He was impressed by Greeley’s growth and urged beautifying the Normal grounds to rival California campuses, hoping to see improvements before his next visit.
Thirty boys attended the first rehearsal and banquet at the First Congregational Church to inaugurate a season of musical work. The table was decorated with petunias and smilax. Supper was served under the direction of Reverend John Doane.
Virgil Evans a 15 year old high school pupil living on Fifteenth street rode a fast bicycle on Eighth street and Ninth avenue colliding with a horse causing a crash with water and glassware from a buggy. He was carried to Gilbert's drug store with a large lump on the back of his head and both bicycle wheels crushed.
A county jail in Greeley hosts a self styled kangaroo court where jailed men and women face fines from two to five dollars, are ducked in cold water, spanked with a razor strap, or forced to scrub cells. Deputy Peterson endorses the practice saying discipline has improved and no one has been hurt.
Wednesday marked the fourteenth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. William Burkhart. Mrs. Burkhart hosted a surprise anniversary dinner after Mr. Burkhart returned from work. Relatives and friends attended including Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Hennick and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Hennick and family, and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fountain and family.
