Fort Collins man argues the state guide requirement for big game hunting is unconstitutional. The case, tied to big game hunting on Medicine Bow National Forest, includes Ken Schakel who received a $100 fine for deer hunting without a licensed guide and will face Albany County District Court proceedings in December before Judge Vernon Bentley.
An 80-year-old Cortez woman, Cecilia Uliharria, was struck and killed by a car driven by 37-year-old Connie Lee Maier of Delores while walking on State Highway 145 in Cortez. The crash pushed the state's highway fatality toll to 679.
A small horseshoe shaped Red Tide patch drifting down the Atlantic coast killed fish and produced foul odors near Miami Beach. County chemist Wyn Nystrom identified the bloom from samples collected off Miami Beach. Officials say fumes irritate noses and lungs but pose no health hazard, with the patch likely starting near Palm Beach.
In Houston, William Johnson Jr., 24, charged with murder after a witness said he pointed a toy pistol at Carol Ann Venters, 28, then drew a real revolver and fired twice while she waited for an elevator. Venters died. Johnson had claimed a nervous condition and history of threats and assault. River of details follow.
