Peter L. Kyle, a ranch hand near Evans, rides a runaway horse for nearly three miles. He escapes with minor injuries after leaping through wire fences and landing in dirt near the Normal school. The horse was severely hurt and may have to be shot.
Special to the Daily Tribune New York November 11 reports alleged sugar trust schemes at U S customs houses. The article claims the trust cheated the United States out of about 20 million dollars by taking five to ten percent of cargo rates. A former messenger boy linked to the trust is said to have leaked the information.
Professor C L Fitch of the State Agricultural College discusses seed potatoes for Stove Prairie seed stock. He notes Stove Prairie seed yields vary, rots in ground, and storage practices from field to dealer may harm seed quality. He urges better handling, closer planting, and proper crop rotation to boost germination and vigor.
Kyle, a noted rider in Cheyenne and Denver shows, was unsaddled for the first time yesterday after a stray paper frightened his bay gelding. The horse bolted through Greeley streets, Kyle was thrown, and the horse finally collapsed near a tree. The animal may need to be shot.
J W Wooten faced police court on a disturbance charge after allegedly trying to detain a young woman at the depot as her sister planned to leave the city. The case was set for a hearing. Mrs Robert Wright of Moessix visits Greeley. they will move beyond Sterling where Mr Wright works as county surveyor.
Special to the Daily Tribune Herbert Brink was sentenced to hang for the murder of Joe Allemand in Basin Wyoming. The fourteen hour jury deliberation followed a highly charged trial amid cattle and sheep war tensions. Supporters alleged the verdict was framed as crowds feared violence outside the courtroom. Mr and Mrs A D Pier and daughter traveled to Denver after the decision.
Two mysterious deaths in Eaton prompt officials to investigate. Tony Krasovich, 12, was decapitated when a switch engine crashed cars near the Union Pacific section house. Coroner will hold an inquest after witnesses describe the fatal accident.
A building on Ninth street between Eighth and Ninth avenues, currently housing the Brunswick pool room, is reported to be sold by owner H. E. Williams to Marshal Gene Williams for about $13,000.
Noah Freeland of Peckham narrowly escaped disaster when a buggy driven toward Greeley near LaSalle left the road and fell into a more than twenty foot deep embankment. Miss Rose Couman and Katherine Carpenter of Greeley suffered bruises while the horse was badly cut but all occupants survived with injuries. Freeland retrieved help and arranged transport to Greeley where medical aid was provided.
J Benne an aged rancher was found dead in his Winne Arkansas cabin with a head wound and a loaded rifle nearby. Authorities believe an old grudge and the same gang of robbers from years past may be responsible. The discovery suggests Benne anticipated trouble from a mysterious enemy.
A. L. Camp argues against a proposed river straightening from the Union Pacific rail line to two miles west. He warns it would flood his neighbors grounds and despoil farms, and notes the grade known as Deaths Grade is too narrow for heavy traffic. He offers widening the grade and river work as conditions for approval.
Fred Peil accused of killing George Kerber fainted during cross examination. He grew deathly white and could not answer for five minutes. a physician gave stimulants and Judge Garrigues ordered a half hour recess.
Congressman A W Rucker announces he will close the Denver office on November 15 and return to Washington for the new session. He invites constituents to write for seeds documents farmer's bulletins or any information, and provides his Washington address Room 172 House Office Building. He expresses a commitment to representing constituents to the best of his ability.
The PEIL case headed to a jury as the prisoner’s wife leaves the courtroom with proceedings underway. Jurors will decide the case based on evidence presented in court.
The spouse and a small child of the prisoner sit through the trial day as Fred Peil testifies in his defense. Peil, accused of killing George Kerber, faced the court late in the day and spoke in his own behalf.
Testimony places members of the Frank family on the stand during the carousal incident that ended in a death. Earlier proceedings included corroboration of prior statements as a man drew a knife to defend himself. Witnesses described the sequence of events and various actions by those involved.
In the trial Peil testifies Kerber struck him twice with a board before Peil drew his knife. Peil says he had been drinking like others and observed Kerber reaching for a hip pocket. Mrs Peil minutes earlier expressed unwavering belief in her husband’s innocence.
Frank Meeker, recently operated on in Greeley for appendicitis, departed Wednesday to return home in Longmont. He had been employed with engineer P. A. Hartung.
The potato inspector office is seen as solving the Greeley Idaho potato dispute within a year. Advocates say sorting and selection of Idaho stock ensures quality, while some Greeley producers mix second-rate potatoes with premium stock. Greeley’s reputation may be challenged by nonlocal suppliers. Special services at Reformed Presbyterian church led by Rev EB A Cooks of La Junta are announced for this evening and Friday.
