Aims College student Mike McDonald won the Weld County chess championship in the five round tournament sponsored by the Greeley Chess Club. He and UNC student Bob Howard tied for second with four points each, McDonald taking the trophy on Solkoff tie breaker after their final round draw.

Three Deaths Boost Colorado Traffic Toll To 586
Three men died in separate Crashes Thursday raising Colorado’s 1973 traffic fatalities to 586, from 670 a year earlier. Victims were William Skinner Hulton 66 of La Junta, Harry Ray Russell 29 of Thornton, and Kevin James McCann 24 of Crested Butte. Hulton died when his car hit a turning semi on U.S. 50 east of Las Animas. Russell and McCann were killed in Gunnison County when their car struck spilled logs after a log truck turned a curve on Colorado 135. The truck driver Kenneth Darrall Cole, 40, was not injured.
