Spur to New Safety Drive As Highway Deaths Decline
New statistics from the National Safety Council show a continuing trend toward safer travel. While the drop in fatalities is welcome, officials say it should spur even stronger efforts to improve road safety across cities and highways nationwide. The council notes that in 1946 the fatality rate was 8 per 100 million vehicle miles. last year it fell to 4.9, the first time under five, though absolute numbers rise with more drivers on the road. In early 1971 there were 71,320 traffic deaths in the first quarter, a 3 percent decline from 1970, and May figures show 4,780 deaths, down 9 percent from March last year, underscoring a hopeful trend but not complacency. The memorial Day period is urged as a reminder to renew safety efforts.
