Seaman reservoir caretaker and wife die in spillway accident

Brown and his wife Mary were found dead after their boat plunged into the spillway at Seaman reservoir. Investigators considered wind and debris, with witnesses noting a possible awakening before the craft went over. The couple, residents of Illinois, had lived in Greeley’s reservoir trailer, and Brown recently transferred from the filtration plant.

Steel negotiators adjourn for week

Steel negotiators met for two hours Tuesday and then adjourned for a week without disclosing progress toward a new contract. Newsmen could not determine the status at the midpoint of the time left before the current pact expires after three weeks of bargaining with a few recesses.

Berlin settlement urged to unite city before German unification

Geneva AP report says US Secretary of State Herter urged Soviet acceptance of a Berlin settlement under its own constitution pending German unification. Western and Soviet ministers prepared private talks to advance negotiations on Berlin and possibly a summit. East German plan envisions Berlin as a free city with limited Western garrison strength and UN involvement.

$164000 Stolen From Armored Truck in Lakewood

Two teen suspects were briefly taken into custody after an armored truck in Lakewood west of Denver was robbed of 164000 in currency. A green and white getaway car was later found abandoned. FBI and local police gathered details from a witness who described a keyful entry and rapid removal of four money sacks.

Bisente Martinez Dies in Japan

Staff Sergeant Bisente Martinez 38 a Greeley native died of a heart attack May 19 at an air base in Honshu Japan while in service 16 years. He served with the army and air force, was stationed at Rapid City before Japan, and leaves a wife Anna and three children Patricia Nea Ivice and Bisenta. Surviving relatives include a brother in California and a sister in Greeley. Rosary Thursday evening and Requiem Mass Friday at Our Lady of Teas Catholic church with Linn Grove interment.

Dulles Widow Names 22 Honorary Pallbearers

Washington AP report says Mrs. John Foster Dulles has chosen 22 government officials, friends and business contacts to serve as honorary pallbearers at the funeral Wednesday. Bingo Licenses in Colorado Fall Short of Hopes

Three Youngsters Hurt in Accident Near Buckingham

Three youngsters sustained minor injuries in a two car crash two and a half miles east of Bushkins ham on U S Highway 14 Monday afternoon. Cynthia J Castor 26 of Buckingham drove a pickup left turning into a private driveway while Charles P Grier 52 of La Crosse Kan tried to pass. Dorothy Grier 11 suffered a broken right thigh and left arm and was taken to Tagan County hospital. Two children in the Castor auto Dehble 6 and Dwayne 7 received bruises.

Greeley Bypass Fund Gets Budget Approval and Plans

Gov. Steve McNichols signed a Colorado highway construction budget of nearly 3 million dollars for the upcoming fiscal year including 2.2 million to extend four-lane US 87 through Weld County and 2.17 million for US 36-40-287 widening from Watkins to Strasboro. The plan outlines a Greeley area bypass with overpasses and access at major streets, plus numerous interstate and local projects across the state.

Weekend traffic might kill 260 during Memorial Day

The National Safety Council warned Memorial Day weekend traffic could reach 260 deaths and 10 000 disabling injuries as 40 million cars flood roads. If reached, the toll would set a new two day record, surpassing 241 in 1953, with last year’s three day tally at 371. The council urged a surefire formula: slow to 60 or below, place arrival time last, avoid the road after drinking.

Eddie Sansom of the Greeley Junior Chamber of Commerce announces the Safety Road-eo will be held Sunday at Illisida Shopping Center due to the state contest in Pueblo on Saturday June 6. Entry is open to drivers aged 18 and 19 with registration 12 noon to 1 pm and the contest starting at 1 pm featuring two driving tests and a written exam. The top three winners advance to Pueblo for the state contest with three prizes awarded.
