Spy in the Sky Satellite Launched by United States
The United States launched an experimental Midas spy satellite from Cape Canaveral atop an Atlas Agena rocket to orbit Earth for near instant warning of ballistic missile attacks. The 5,000 pound craft aims to detect heat from enemy rockets with infrared sensors, feeding immediate alerts to U.S. forces. The test underscores Cold War tension with the UN debate over espionage aircraft and raises questions about space based surveillance.
