CAPE CANAVERAL AP Astronaut Gordos Cooper rests after a whirlwind welcome as he sits atop a rocket prepared for spaceflight. At a news conference he calls Mercury a milestone and notes possible future flights while officials discuss next steps and policy choices affecting the space program.
Max Gutierrez, 30, of 932 6th St, was injured in the second of two hit and run crashes near Gilcrest on Sunday around 8:20 p.m. He was working on his stalled auto along U.S. 89 when struck by a northbound vehicle whose driver fled. Gutierrez was taken to Weld County General Hospital with bruises and no serious condition reported. A separate first collision killed a Gilcrest resident, and officials noted rain and drought impacts on the area.

Mary F. Currigan, 68, mother of Denver mayoral candidate Tom Currigan, died when her car left a road and hit a tree on Sunday. Her two passengers, Ronald Pinenet and Dean Westbrook, were injured. The incident occurred as Currigan was struck near a church by a vehicle driven by Sila Wilking, 20, in Lakewood Colorado. The crash raised Denver traffic toll to 139 for the period, up 26 from a year ago.
Police traced Delgado as the driver after a fatal collision on U S 8 near Gilcrest. Natividad, 54, of Gilcrest, died at the scene and Gormley, 20, of Cololums was injured fatally en route home from the farm. Investigators pressed on with the all night search and paint evidence matched the Ford driven by Delgado. The crash prompted highway patrol action and coroner reports as officials assessed blame and stakes.
A farm accident near Greeley left Keith Morrison 44 minutes pinned between a tractor and a semi truck after the front axle crushed him. Firefighters and medics freed Morrison, who was conscious with severe leg injuries, while bystanders and investigators described a tense rescue and hospital transfer to Weld County General Hospital for treatment.
Cape Canaveral AP Gordon Cooper endured a grueling news conference turning a crank on a space craft mockup while tearful he spoke of his many children and the need to provide for them. He mentioned taking them along on future missions and recalled his long day in the field as rain and fatigue pressed in.
In Denver AP dispatch, drouth stricken eastern Colorado saw light rains that offered partial relief after weeks of heat. State agricultural commissioner W. Swisher said more rain is needed in the coming week or two to save the wheat crop in the north.

In Birmingham the Board of Education ordered expulsion or suspension of 4,08 Negro pupils arrested in antisegregation demonstrations. Superintendent Theo Wright said expulsions apply to those over 16 while younger students face suspension. Readmission rules allow summer school to make up work but final semester grades are forfeited. Police investigated dynamite theft tied to mass protests.
