The council passed the dog ordinance with stiff fines for untagged dogs and demanded strict enforcement. Officials granted ministerial use of the downtown park for Sunday services while deferring the sportsmen’s request for Sunday ball games.
Rev. J. M. Wylie of the Reformed Presbyterian church spoke at the high school during Peace Day observances. He urged cultivating peace within individuals and through schools, and said public officials should embrace the peace idea to foster international harmony. Mrs. W. A. Franklin of Los Angeles and her niece Miss Helen Gregory visited in Greeley on Tuesday.
A lightning bolt at 4 PM yesterday killed Frank Allen and five mules at Fred Peterson’s grading camp on Horace Atkinson farm near Greeley. Allen, in charge of the push team, was instantly struck and killed. the six victims died in an instant. Coroner notified. efforts to locate relatives underway.
H. H. Rogers, Standard Oil magnate, died at 7:30 AM at his home 3 East 78th Street New York City of apoplexy. His wife was at his bedside. Rogers had been fading in health for years and suffered a stroke two years earlier. He was prominent in Standard Oil affairs and his death caused a stock dip among Standard Oil operators.
The will of Samuel M. Morse was admitted to probate this morning. Morse died in New York state recently, leaving property in the county. He lived with his brother Warren M. Morse near Greeley until shortly before death. Warren M. Morse was named administrator and will share the greater portion of an estate valued around $12,000.
Judge Bradfield officiated a wedding this morning for 8 EF Purdin and Ada Pitman of Baton. The couple, well known in Baton, plan to return home after a short wedding trip to Denver.
North end of Weld county sees landowners and Warren Live Stock company pressing for a government backed survey to reclaim up to a million acres by diverting water from the divide. Local owners pay for studies to present a joint plan with county and state support and congressional backing. The piece argues the project could cost about $20 per acre with widespread potential benefits. Piano debt for high school students nearly cleared as cantata proceeds exceed expenses.
Three local men George Bedford L H Munn and D J Wuetstone form a contracting outfit to build one mile of grade for the Pleasant Valley extension subletting from Sprague. They plan to start with about fifteen teams and add more. Rails expected to be laid before August first per Superintendent Hitchcock.
Elia Hinkle was granted a divorce from Samuel J. on cruelty grounds. They married in St. Louis and lived in Fort Collins before separating. She receives custody of two children aged three and 18 months. Attorney Ewing presented the case. Chauncey W. Rice plans a coast trip and return for next year’s high school graduation.
Windsor begins the county's northern half with its first bona fide garage for hire. Conrad Rehn, a clothing merchant, builds a cement block facility near the depot on Fifth Street. He plans to rent it to Bert Springer, who already operates an automobile for hire and sees growing demand from real estate men and others.
The Eureka Mercantile company filed articles of incorporation today. It is a Johnstown concern engaging in general merchandise. Promoters are Samuel Parkin, John Sansom, W. J. Kirkpatrick and Charles Kitzpatrick. Capital stock is $5000.
Three four ths of county schools close for summer tomorrow night with the rest opening vacations a week later. Directors keep current teachers, funds to upgrade old schools and build new ones, notably Windsor and other districts planning bonds. Officials report rising enrollment and widespread eighth grade diploma distributions.
The Evp worth League district convention begins in Loveland with eight Greeley delegates including Nora Rugh Carrie Euge Dera Cameron Laura Cameron Jessie Thompson Jessie Lace Dr Ella Mead and Alfred Austin Trudy Cameron and Ernest Tuck will attend as district officers and Harold Easterday and Frank Austin are among the Greeley attendees.
County Treasurer Allen receives metal racks book cases and cabinets to replace wooden shelves and metal file cases. The new fixtures aim to protect official documents from fire or water damage.
Mr and Mrs Harry Van Antwerp relocate from Knob Hill after living in a tent because of Mr Van Antwerp illness hay fever. The note highlights their temporary housing solution and health concerns within the local community.
Two preschool children in Leyden walked the streets for over a week with a throat illness later confirmed as diphtheria. Their mother took them daily to a city doctor at 712 Fifth Avenue before the health officer was notified. The doctor sent a mucous sample to Denver. diagnosis confirmed diphtheria. The health officer urges earlier notification and disinfects the family’s house as exposure risk looms. The father moved the family back to county residence.
A 34-year-old child of J Bowden, a teamster, narrowly escaped death when a colt kicked it as the father failed to notice it following into a corral. The horse turned, toppled the child, then stepped on it before the hoof slipped free. The child recovered with only bruises.
A reception for the new mayor followed by a dinner in honor of Judge and Mrs Bradfield was hosted by Mrs A M Green. The evening featured music and social conversation with guests including her son WY EB Green and wife.
D A Camfield engages architect Rauschlaub to inspect the Greeley site for a new addition. He will design plans for an outside hotel cafe entrance to eliminate the need to enter the office or lobby.
Lane Funeral services for Mrs Mary Lane wife of Thomas Lane were held at the Catholic church Tuesday afternoon. The 36 year old was survived by her husband and seven children and died from spinal meningitis.
A Tuesday blaze at Charles Camp’s ranch destroyed sheds and corrals but spared the barns and house thanks to quick neighbor assistance. Origin of the fire remains unknown. Mrs. G D Warner from Grand Junction visited Durkee parents that evening. Dr. and Mrs. Warner plan a three month Europe trip with their daughter Aileen Monahap. Dr. and Mrs. Lee Paul arrived from Illwaco Washington to visit Mrs. Paul’s mother E E Zeis. The Pauls brought ferns for the park fountain.
