Obituary notes the death of a local leader at Goverancs after a prolonged illness. He served as Yossister at Severanyd for 13 years before resigning recently due to health. Survived by a son, W. J. Gillespie, and by his wife.
Glenna Collett advanced to the British women's golf championship final after morning and afternoon 36 hole bouts with Hilli Cameron and Enid Wilson. Enid Wilson beat Helen Hicks as Diana Fishwick and Kathleen MacDonald also progressed with other results noted.
College seniors at Lewiston enjoyed a sneak day with a trip to a local hotel. About seven per cent of the graduating class joined the outing by bus and private car. Headquarters at Eaton Park Lewiston hotel provided meals and indoor activities while chaperones Dr. Z J Mahan Mrs Lucy Adama and Dr G W Frasier supervised.
Engineer A. B. Collins of the state highway commission said Northeastern Colorado looks the beautiful garden after a tour of Morgan, Logan, Phillips and Washington counties. He reported abundant rain, good grain crops, and lush pasture in the region. Collins was inspecting road construction east of Fort Morgan and Berling with L. N. Blauvelt from the department.
Five Johnstown students excel in Colorado statewide Every Pupil scholarship contest. Edith Scofield ranked in the top 1 percent in two subjects and led the state in Latin studies, while she also placed third in plane geometry. Emily Margus earned the newest top grade in first-year Spanish, Andy Nildkol placed fourth in general science, and Mildred Johnson and Mildred Dooney placed sixth and seventh in the same subject. The report also notes weather and rainfall data for Pawnee in April and May.
Windsor Golf Club opened its thin-geag season at Eaton on Sunday with 20 players. Eaton defeated Windsor 33 to 21. A return match is planned in Windsor on May 36. Fort Collins attorney Winton Ault, a prominent figure in local Democratic circles, is seriously injured from a glider crash and will remain in bed for weeks with a cracked vertebra.
Boston defeated Chicago 10 to 8 in a lively Big League tilt with five lead changes. Grimes earned the win over Blake as Grimes struck out key batters. Tedbaugh Hornsby and Sacrifice Ball homered for Boston while Bisler led Chicago with a triple.
County board urges state approval of a Johnstown to Windsor north south corridor to relieve congestion on arterial routes. Proponents argue the route would serve a coal and agriculture region, speed traffic, and balance state highway shares between Adams and Weld counties based on vehicle ownership and road usage data.
In Denver on May 16 a large majority of the 185 committee members backed William V. Hodges for the senatorial nomination. The Skirmish pitted Hodges against George H. Shaw with McComb challenging the process. Leroy Williams defended Hodges while Gillespie died Thursday at 4 20 p m and funeral services were scheduled for Sunday at 2 40.
A jury acquitted Governor Walter J. Ko ler of Wideonaly on corruption charges under the state act. Judge G Gehrz ordered an alternative verdict framework and delayed final rulings, as courtroom tensions rose with spectators reacting in Milwaukee.
