London reports Adolf Hitler facing a double blow as Allied momentum in North Africa accelerates. Goering and Himmler reportedly depart for Italy to reorganize defense. Berlin papers portray Germans as unsettled by Tunisian defeat and the hoped for new Axis resilience in a rapidly shifting war.
First limited test run of potatoes will be sent to plant of New Hydrated Food Products Company of Colorado in Greeley Friday and Saturday. Orville Tatler, president and general manager, said Tuesday. Finishing touches on installation of machinery are being tightened. For the first test no extra staff will be ordered. When full operation begins a large crew will be hired. Plant at 600 Sixth Avenue will work on dehydrating potatoes for government contracts.
The Banking Committee approved unanimously a bill keeping treasury held silver for domestic use at 40 cents an ounce for manufacturing. Senator Maloney indicated deportation to the Arizona tomorrow, calling the bill non-controversial and likely to pass.
A Greeley man, F. Franklin of 1218 Fourteenth Street, rescued five children aged 7 to 11 from a raft on Seeleya Lake near Greeley Monday before 7 p.m. He towed toward shore while neighbors and rescue crews arrived. Strong waves and near-drowning danger were reported, with the rescuer guiding the children to safety.
London reports Prime Minister Churchill sends congratulations to General Dwight D. Eisenhower for Allied advances from Tunis to Bizerte. He also commends General Sir Harold Alexander and Sir Arthur Tedder, directing Arthur to relay to Major General Doolittle and others who led air forces in the Tunisian campaign.
Washington May 10 senate finance committee approved a modified Rumsfarlson skip year measure for current income tax collection. The panel voted 18 to 1 after Senator Dalley solved opponents, with Chairman George requesting reporting the measure to the senate for debate Wednesday.
An earthshaking chemical blast at the Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Plant in South Charleston shattered a brick wall and injured at least 13 workers, some seriously. The unit sits on Training Island in the Kanawha River center, amid fears of additional fatalities.
