Government data released shows Colorado winter wheat and rye valued at 4.270 million dollars, up 1.208 million from 1911 May 1. Acreage rises to 193000 for wheat and 24100 for rye with higher expected yields. total wheat output 4,284,600 bushels and rye 272,300 bushels, elevating crop values to 2.899 million for wheat and 0.226 million for rye.
LaSalle May 9 The Semephone Material yards of the Union Pacific road company have been moved to Wesburg where the line of mephones is being installed Signal installments are viewed here for future supply yards at Salle Mr May in charge went to Julesburg to continue work A charging station for somephones is set up and Mains attends it.
Fort Lapton May 9. T C Winthoun finished planting 196 acres of Australian variety corn on dry land one mile southeast of town. The crop will be used to feed stock.
Colorado's twelve delegates to the Democratic national convention at Baltimore June 25 met at the Albany hotel in Denver and elected Charles F. Tew of Greeley chairman and C. P. Maltby secretary. Thomas J. McCue and W. J. Galligan were named a transportation committee. L. A. Van Tilberg was Colorado's member on the convention's resolution and platform committee, with W. J. Galligan on credentials and John Donovan on permanent organization and order of business.
The juniors at Teachers College High School host an annual banquet for seniors and faculty at the Congregational church signaling the start of commencement events. Graduates total 56, with diplomas to be awarded later in May.
The town board of Milliken asks A A Smith of Denver to draft plans and specs for a 15000 dollar municipal water works plant and submit within ten days. If approved Smith may receive the contract and take payment in town bonds at par. The council also weighs a town hall project and pending special meeting Monday night. Oliver Eshe wins cement crossing contract for 85 feet.
The Smith family gathers each summer on Briggsdale ranches near Briggsdale. Dorothy and Marie Smith return from studies, Mercedes Woodford travels from New York, and cousins join in the family life at Sky land and Mile Square, with meals, musicales, and farm life shaping their vacation.
Kersey May 9. The Sanford family shepherd dog named Jack saved a two year old baby from a rattlesnake attack on a dry farm east of town. The dog positioned itself between child and snake, fought the creature, was bitten in the neck, and died hours later. The mother moved the children to safety while the father tended the dog. Locals note an unusually high rattlesnake presence on the plains this year and warn homesteaders to watch children.
Contractors have resumed work on the Greeley Poudre irrigation system. J C White, Hunter and Bailey and A A Howard crews are on the job. McGrew reservoir is nearly complete and the largest on the system can hold 19 feet of water. A large force is expected next week with D A Camfield returning to plan completion of ditches and reservoirs.
The Crucible staff at State Teachers college held its annual dinner with faculty members present. Dainties of yellow and white blossoms graced tables for 24. Toasts covered topics from faculty and Crucible to student life and arts, led by toastmaster Hadden.
Members under Mrs. Delbridge staged The Real Thing by John Kendrick Bangs as the season finale. Present were Mary Reynolds Anna Hugh Helen Starr Blanche Davis and others with Blanche Hughes providing piano solos. The meeting closed with reports and the election of officers for next year.
The quarterly conference met in Evans on Wednesday morning with Rev Crooks from La Junta Rev French of Denver Elder Carsoon from Denver Elder Orr of Greeley and 8S Faris of Peckham forming the court. The session installed Rev McBurney as pastor and Rev Crook addressed him followed by Rev French delivering the sermon. A congregational dinner was hosted at Thomas Johnson’s home at noon.
A three act play titled A Family Affair will be performed tomorrow evening at the Knights and Ladies of Security meeting in the Odd Fellows hall. Cast includes Daniel Gillispie Ray Reed Jerkins Ray N. Castle Deocron Smith Chas. L. Kellow Miss Camson Miss Ethel Crall Miss Della Woods Mrs. R. J. MeLucas with the troupe billed as a comedy delight.
The annual county rally of the Royal Neighbors of America auxiliary to the Modern Woodmen of America takes place this evening in the I O O F hall. State officers will attend and about 40 delegates are expected from Severance Windsor Eaton Ault and Fort Lupton lodges. Mrs Thomas Winch leads the Greeley lodge. Supreme Deputy Mrs Woolums and Mrs Wolfe visit for the occasion. A reception for officers and delegates was held at Mrs J A Thompsons 1701 Seventh Avenue with purple and white lodge colors and spring blossoms.
Gust Giavias a section worker and Greek was arrested on a charge of assault on his cousin James Giavias after a dispute over a $100 note and wage garnishment. The beating occurred near the Giavias tent. the incident prompted a warrant issued by Judge W. B. Longwith.
E P Hubbell, former editor of the Ault Advertiser, who left journalism for farming in Florida, has bought a paper at Braidertown Florida. The old city sits on a bay and is a popular retreat. Miss Julia Hubbell ends her local teaching term and joins her parents for vacation.
Greeley Masons from Occidental lodge No. 20 A F and A M traveled to Johnstown on Tuesday evening to assist with the three degrees work at the new lodge. The trip was by auto, with attendees including William Burkhart A H Seely C J Yardley C S Faulkner J A Taylor Mr Kay Lee Carrell T A Stevens H H Larkin C N Jackson Sam Jones Charles Knelly W H Sanborn and P W Allen.
Milliken forms tomato growers association with 15 stockholders led by J F Burkheimer as president and R M Benton as treasurer. The group will cultivate 40 acres for the Milliken canning factory and share profits, aiming to secure 100 acres for operation by Greene Canning of Denver. Planting begins May 20 with hot bed setups and expected strong yields.
Commissioner George Hodgson vows to repair the long neglected road from Hardin toward the east county line. A large crew under Cyrus Neal works on the highway disrupted by Empire and Bijou ditches and years of seepage. If improved, it will become a first class pike linking Fort Morgan to Greeley and serving Estes Park access.
A new ball team organized in Greeley will be called the Greeley Giants. Moving beyond printers games, the squad strengthens with a stronger lineup and plans to play Otto's team at Island Grove park on Sunday morning. Lineup includes Taylor Castle Boland Hastings Duff Myers Lloyd Reed Hathaway and McDermott.
In Ault on May 9, J A Bel cher was the candidate for school board secretary not B A Wilkins who is already the treasurer. Jacob Has brouch won and will serve a one year term from May 6. State law sets secretaries’ terms to end together. after next year most will be elected for three years except in first class districts.
People identified with the Church of God known as the Holiness group plan a full day meeting at the district No. 160 school house north of Fort Lupton next Sunday. Rev. Guilford will preach in the forenoon and afternoon, with H. A. Brooks of Denver speaking in the evening.
