Grave Opened at Evans Cemetery Investigated by Sheriff

Grave at Evans Cemetery was opened by unknown vandals Friday night. Deputies found the rough box intact though disturbed, with tombstone toppled and dirt shoveled aside. The body’s identity could not be confirmed, and a nearby fresh grave with a small cross and wreath held a parakeet remains. Committal services for Miss Vera Sullivan will be held Wednesday in Canon City.

Storms Rake Plains Area

Severe thunderstorms and flooding swept the plains and parts of the nation. Tornadic winds and funnel clouds hit Kansas Oklahoma and Texas with hail up to golf balls. Heavy rainfall and floods, especially Kilgore Henderson Overton area, caused property damage.

Federal Control of Liquor Ads Proposed by Kansas Official

W E Murphy Kansas director of alcoholic beverage control urged federal oversight of interstate liquor advertising at the National Conference of State Liquor Administrators. He condemned duplicate state regulations as costly and wasteful, arguing a single national standard would protect the public interest and reduce ad production for multiple states.

Moisture and Showers Hit Greeley Area Sunday

Thunderstorms Sunday evening brought about a tenth of an inch of moisture to Greeley with additional rain later. Cooler, cloudy weather followed Monday, and forecasters predicted scattered showers for the day. Public Service station logged .10 inch Sunday, Great Western Sugar factory reported 1.1 inches, with highs around 68 in town.

Voter turnout in Greeley’s ward elections shows only a fraction of the 9 993 registered in the district cast ballots by 7 p.m. Norman M. Dean and Robart Singer compete for a six year board of education term with polling places at Park and Arlington schools. Dean is Weld County Bank executive vice president. Singer is assistant manager at Greeley Feed and Bean. No issues were at stake.

Occasional rain or drizzle with light snow possible tonight, moving across the region. Clouds linger north and west, with cooler tonight east. Tuesday brings a mix of clouds and scattered showers, cooler along the east. Lows from 15 to 23 in the mountains, around 30s lower elevations, highs Tuesday in the mid 40s to mid 50s.

CAPE CANAVERAL Florida the Titan intercontinental ballistic missile test flight reached final separation of its two stages marking the fourth straight successful objective. The launch at 1 30 pm EST over the Atlantic saw a brief fourth stage separation and no engine firing in the second stage as it descended, with officials confirming the staging process and guidance systems performed as planned.

Six Injured in Weld County Traffic on Sunday

Six persons were injured and nine accidents investigated by the highway patrol in Weld County on Sunday. Incidents included a Gill teen with a forehead cut in a one car crash on Main Street, a Longmont crash where two people were hurt after a station wagon veered into a borrow pit, and multiple spinouts and collisions east of Erie and near Eaton and La Salle. Damage estimates ranged from minor to about 1,200 dollars.

Eaton Bands First at CSU

The Halon high school band won first place and Eaton Junior high band finished third in a Fort Collins marching band contest with CSU Aggie Day. Eaton’s high school band, directed by Charles Childers, had 44 students. junior band had 22. Five bands total competed. Eaton earned a trophy.

Pulitzer Prize Winners Named for 1950 Awards

The 1950 Pulitzer prizes were announced with Robert Lewis Taylor winning the fiction prize for The Travels of Salmia McPheeters and Archibald MacLeish awarded the drama prize. The Utica Observer-Dispatch and Utica Daily Press shared the public service medal for campaigning against vice, gambling, and corruption. The International reporting prize went to Joseph Starlin and Philip Santora of the New York Daily News for coverage of the Batista regime’s downfall in Cuba.

Health Inspectors Can Search Homes Supreme Court Rules

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that health inspectors may search private homes without a warrant in a Baltimore case. Retired GW Worker Dies in Colorado Obituary

Grover L. Nihiser, a 65 year old retired Great Western Sugar boilerhouse foreman, died Saturday night at Weld County General Hospital after a long career in Greeley. Born October 24, 1886 in Lagan Ohio, he lived in Auburn before joining GW Sugar in 1912. Survived by a large extended family, services are 2:00 PM Tuesday at Adamson Memorial Chapel with Linn Grave interment under Poudre Valley Lodge DOF.

Hope for Missing Cole Pilot Fades in Snowbound Search

Dillon Mont reports snow and cold hampered the search for George H. Curklane, 25, a Denver native and former Western Air Lines co-pilot, missing since last Friday after departing from Bulye on a flight toward Idaho Falls. More than four planes scoured the Montana Idaho border area as 12 inches of fresh snow fell and temperatures stayed below freezing.

Six Die On Colorado Roads In Weekend Toll Record

Six people died in weekend crashes across Colorado, the 48 hour toll marking a yearly high and lifting the state total to 14 more than last year at this time. Notable victims included 18 year old Willams Nethelacl of Englewood and 35 year old Tillia L. Clawson of Liberal, Kansas, among others. Several injured were treated at Swed ish Hospital in Englewood and Rangely M hospital.

70 mph Limit Not Effective Until July 1
