The Tribune launches a Then and Now photo series on Page today showing the college as it was and as it is ahead of the Golden Jubilee celebration to be published intermittently until June 14. The inaugural feature opens with the campus section south from Cranford, recalling ten years ago and the college’s early era.
Prime Minister Chamberlain disclosed in Parliament that British forces withdrew from Andalsnes in Norway without delaying actions or suffering major casualties. He said Germany anticipated invasion through Norway and Denmark, with Allied troops ready but not deployed, while German air and naval actions targeted ships and carriers.
S Armentrout, father of Dr WL D Armentrout, vice president of Colorado State College of Education, died at the Grealey Wesnils on Thursday morning after a week’s illness. Born October 29, 1853 in Meckingham County Virginia, he lived in Missouri and Nebraska before moving to Nye in 1928. Survived by widow, children W D Armentrout and Oshova Armentrout, ten grandchildren, and other relatives. Funeral set for Saturday at First United Church with cremation in Denver. Marys are in care.
Army chiefs testimony in closed session suggested that every military plane in U S service is obsolete per European war plans. Arnold reportedly argued that European developments require a revolution in armament and training to counter German advances.
Theresa Mochrie Estate filed for probate in county court on Thursday. The filing lists the estate valued at 6300 with bequests to Hilda Brace and Teusie Lee and others, plus a remainder divided among four children. Due to funds shortfalls until the new fiscal year begins July 1, NYA activities in the county will halt from May 8. Keith Vaughn and Martha Jenkins announce county library HQ in Grants to stay open to serve many librarians countywide. Jerry Morgan remains NYA librarian in charge with sufficient help to continue temporarily. Full service resumes in July as WPA bookmobile plans proceed with county cooperation.
Leonard A Meterson fifty four year old furniture dealer from Greeley died at his home on a Wednesday evening. He had resided in Greeley since September and leaves a widow Licia Peterson and several children. Surviving relatives include Petersons in Denver Englewood and Greeley followed by funeral services to be held with limited arrangements.
Mrs Elvin Nigro wife of an International board member sustained injuries in a two car crash near Steamboat Springs on Monday. Her husband John F Nigro a Denver to Steamboat Springs traveler also injured as their auto overturned after a tire blew out. The hospital had not released full injury details.
A wage hour amendment to allow salaried workers to exceed weekly hours, with an average limit, was tentatively approved by a house committee. Rumapeck, Democrat of Georgia, sponsored the measure which requires voluntary acceptance by workers and employers and approval by the wage-hour administrator. The bill would not change existing limits unless average hours across 26 weeks stay within set bounds.
Greece orders ten classes of reserve army officers to report amid rising tensions with Italy in the Mediterranean. Prime Minister Metaxas pledges unity and strength as the country readies for what he calls a decisive war, stressing the need for discipline and national resolve.
