Court rules Boulder cannot deny water to subdivision

Colorado Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that Boulder must provide water and sewer service to Gunbarrel Hill landowners proposing subdivision northeast of Boulder. The court found Boulder operates as a public utility and must treat all within its franchise area equally, denying service only for utility reasons, not growth control.

Four Prisoners Escape Colfax County Jail

Four inmates overpowered guards at Colfax County Jail and seized knives from the kitchen before escaping Sunday night. Jailer John Maes was injured and treated. escapees named as Johnny Lee Wright 34 Cor) Bight 24 Fred Sammy Cordova 38 and Robert Leo Doux 13. Wright and Bight faced worthless check charges, Cordova a probation violation, Doux a receiving stolen property charge.

Case Won't Be Prosected In 1972 Prison Slaying

Despite eyewitnesses, District Attorney John Witcher will not prosecute the 1972 stabbing death of heroin dealer Johns at Colorado State Prison. Thomas Bueno is identified by inmates as the attacker, but his mental illness and ongoing confinement at the State Hospital in Pueblo prevent conviction. An escape attempt in which a policeman was shot is noted in proceedings.

Cattle Lost From Northern Range Blown Into Platte Valley

A 1976 Tribune note reports about 6000 cattle blown from Colorado Territory’s northern range into the Platte Valley after a severe storm. Snow depth leaves them without feed as owners are urged to act promptly to recover and provide sustenance to the distressed herd.

Relief sought for destitute widow in Stephens house

One hundred years ago a Mrs ffancock, living in Mrs Stephens house one door east of Mr doyce, suffered from want of food and fuel with no means of support. She has been relieved only by a few neighbors. The note mentions Mrs Hammett, photographer, on Main St. Tribune, Feb 27, 1878.

Traffic toll climbs to 77 in 1976 Colorado crashes

Taxes income ratio in Colorado unchanged since 1973

Colorado Public Expenditure Council reports taxes to income ratio unchanged since 1973 as both rose equally. Per capita personal income rose 9.7 percent to 5515 while taxes per resident grew to 1744. Colorado led among eight states in per capita state income tax and welfare expenditures, with Wyoming and Nebraska highest property taxes.
