Parts of the city heard a loud blast following a boiler explosion. Fire units responded while24 equipment pieces and a Boy Scout group were involved. 22 men attended a vestry meeting that disbanded before the blast. initial blast time around 9:48 p.m. was heard across the area.
Off duty firefighters battled a blaze in Cottonwood Village and Jackson Field area as explosions rattled the scene. Twenty five small blasts were heard while fire crews contained the fire and one firefighter, Gary Novinger, fought the flames with an injured arm. Local witnesses reported intense flashes and flames shooting high as the blaze spread through parts of Greeley.
An explosion at Trinity Episcopal Church near 6th Ave and 11th St injured two people who escaped unharmed. Scout leaders Joseph Boshinski and Bob Snidow were conducting a troop meeting in the basement when the blast caved ceilings and windows. Colorado Senate approves a bill restricting unemployment compensation eligibility sending it to the House. The vote split along party lines with nine Democrats opposing or supporting various amendments and an attempted modification on severance pay.
Eaton farmer and longtime livestock raiser Harry E. Bailey died at Weld County General Hospital after a brief illness. Bailey, active in regional agriculture and seed groups, headed wartime potato coordination for Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming and helped found the Weld County Certified Seed Growers Association. He served on local advisory boards and was a longtime member of regional stocker and agricultural organizations. He left a wife, daughter, and several grandchildren.
