Yankee Space Probe Pioneer V Launches Toward Sun Orbit

Washington AP reports the United States launched the Pioneer V space probe from Cape Canaveral aboard a Thor Able rocket. The 165000 pound thrust mission aims to study space between Earth and Venus and test interplanetary communication while orbiting the sun. The probe exceeded required speed, reached 247... miles per hour, and will swing near the sun in its first pass about five months from now.

Flood damages roads as Lost Creek floods Weld County

Floods from Lost Creek caused extensive road damage from Prospect Valley east to Weld County. Water briefly ran over state highway 79 about 1 foot deep for 200 to 400 feet. A county house basement near Prospect Valley flooded to about two feet, with pumps brought in to remove water. Ground remains frozen, speeding runoff. Two draglines and 15 to 16 trucks planned to repair roads over at least a week. Also, Weld County hosts a student science fair at Kepner hall on CSC camps with exhibits in Kepner hall and festival events tonight.

Weld county oil production for 1859 totaled about 40 million barrels statewide, with Weld county producing around 1.2 million barrels valued at over five million dollars. Landowners received roughly 6.07 million dollars from lease bonuses and rentals as royalties.

Third March Storm Hammers Mideast States

A third March storm paralyzed the region from the Mississippi Valley to the Carolinas and northern Georgia, hindering rescue work in four northwestern North Carolina counties where 11 families were cut off. Cuba Seizes Three Sugar Mills in Eastern Cuba

The Cuban government announced the seizure of three U S owned sugar mills Isabel Los Canon and Soledad in eastern Cuba valued at about 30 million dollars. The takeover was by the Institute of Agrarian Reform and the Ministry for the Recovery of Stolen Property, which now runs 32 of Cuba’s 161 mills.

Mine Rescuers Set Up Vent System in West Virginia Mine

Logan West Virginia AP report says rescuers, delayed by smoke, haul pipes and woolen planks into the mine to build a makeshift ventilating system. 18 miners have been trapped for over four days by fire and rock slides. state mines director Crawford L Wilson says the system aims to clear the pit and allow teams to advance roughly 1200 feet to reach those believed marooned.

City urged to require subdividers turn over NCWCD water

City council was advised by Mander B H Cruce to adopt a policy requiring subdividers to transfer their NCWCD water allotments to the city before being supplied city water. The plan would apply to land within three miles of Greeley, with transfers handled via district rules and a council resolution.

Eisenhower seeks postal rate hike to fund 1961 budget
